diapers -start with size 1 (NB may be too small for a chunky baby and only last a couple weeks)

gifts card to Walmart or Target (generally a superstore) that have a baby motif printed on it, not a gift card from a specialty store like BabiesRUS - for one, there's only one store in my town (15 miles across town), and prices are expensive, even on sale (30% off of a $10 jumpsuit is still an expensive $7 one, I can easily buy for cheaper elsewhere), and third reason, if the parents have alrady stocked up on baby item and don't need anything , they can use the card for groceries.

I am a very careful with my baby items budget as they grow so fast, and I always buy for next year (s) on sale/clearance at the end of the season. So, I REALLY appreciate when I get the receipt along with an item I don't need so I can return it.

See if the mommy-to-be registered anywhere. Buying gifts off of her registry is always a good idea. You know you're getting her something she wants or needs!

If she hasn't registered....you can't go wrong with diapers, duplicates are never a worry and you KNOW she'll need plenty of them! I'd go with size one, and skip newborn though because many times they do not fit into newborn size for very long.

Gift card to a store that carries baby items!! She can get whatever she wants, so this is also a guarantee that she's getting something you know she'll like!

here is the best gift ever i got it from a couple friends of mine and i loved it and everyone at the shower ooed and aaahhhed the whole time!

a clothes line with clothes pinned to it. the girls went and bought a couple packs of onsies in different sizes, they got a few pairs of pants that would match the onsies. the put some lil baby socks on it and some wash cloths and burp clothes. they got a couple of cute outfits and then the cutest thing was a bathing suit and sunglasses for her for next year. they folded up the clothes line inside of a laundry basket. put a really cute baby blanket on top and tucked in a bottle of dreft baby laundry soap. the weaved a pink ribbon through the laundry basket as the bow. then when i got to open this one, they had me stand up and pull the end of the clothes line out of the basket. all these cute little clothes just kept coming out. they aranged them in order of size0-3 and then 3-6 and 6-9. if you do this make sure you consider the size of the baby and the season of clothes. it really was a great gift. and really they just bought a couple packs of onsies and a pack of socks, a pack of wash cloths and burp rags, and a few cute outfits. a blanket ,laundrysoap and a landry basket. i am going to do this for the next shower i go to.

Something off the registry, a gift card to target or walmart or babies R us. I always appreciated things like a baby first aid kit, a good digital thermometer, something to check the temp of the bath water, bath toys, books or travel stuff like a travel wipe case or travel size powder, diaper cream, diaper holder... She will get plenty of clothes best to get something out of the ordinary but useful.

Honestly, Walmart or Walgreen's gift cards. People get you plenty of cute crap you use once & then it piles up in your home. If you give a gift card she can buy as things become needed. Trust me. Just experienced this.
