The BBC's director-general Mark Thompson also said he will announce what action is to be taken within "days".

The Corporation, which has received more than 18,000 complaints, has been accused of being too slow to react to the row. It pulled the plug on the recording of Friday Night With Jonathan Ross just hours before it was due to go ahead. The presenters' BBC radio shows are also being taken off the air, to be replaced by other programmes to be confirmed.

The BBC would not say whether or not the high-profile stars are continuing to be paid.

Making abusive phone calls to a 78 year old man and implying that he has had sexual intercourse with his Grand-Daughter is the lowest of the low and out here in the real world would cause no end of pain and misery to both parties. There is no excuse for this behaviour. It is indefensible and untenable. If it was you or I then we would be charged by the Police and prosecuted and that's what needs to be done. It's all very noble of Mr Sachs to accept an apology from Ross and Brand but the punishment should be applicable under the law of the land and I will tell you why by this wee story.

Many years ago when I was growing up in Drumchapel,Glasgow there was a wee man who lived up the next close..to non-Scottish readers..a close is a tenement building containing 6 or 8 flats. This wee man was a quiet reserved wee man.He went to work in an Insurance Office in Glasgow city centre and didn't bother anyone on the street where he lived. He never took part in the drunken house parties which inevitably ended up in 2 men stripped to the waist having a square go over a religious party song being sung at the said parties. He lived alone and as far as I can remember the only thing that seemed to amuse people on the street was the fact he wore a hat like Harry Worth and a pair of leather gloves with the Gannex coat.

Now and again as kids me and my mates would knock on doors and ask our neighbours if they needed anything from the shops. This supplemented our meagre pocket money.Somehow a rumour was spread about this wee man.First he was a,"poof".Then it morphed into that peculiar and insidious expression common to the West of Scotland,"stoat the baw".What that means is Paedophile. There was no evidence to verify this allegation. It was pure gossip and it became, as these things can do,how people percieved this wee man.

His windows were bricked.Dog shite was put through his letter box and he was ostracised from the community. Some people who are my age told lies about him and made allusions to things. These people are my age now and on their conscience lies this terrible fact.

    This wee man commited suicide.

It came out afterwards that this wee man was a war hero. What he had done as a soldier and seen and suffered during that war had profoundly affected him.Now I can still remember the tears I cried as boy of 12.Even writing this is painful but it has to be wrote because this is were it ends up and I bet you somewhere in this country it goes on today.

I have read many posts about this incident by these 2 and I am saddened by how a section of our society thinks it's all nothing and was only done in the name of comedy.

    Well who's fcuking laughing now!

We have become a nation innundated by saliciousness and sexual perversion. You cannot turn on your telly without some programme teaching us or telling us about our sex lives, fetishes and desires. You buy a newspaper and all you see in some of them is phone lines so saddos can pay money to listen to someone talking dirty so they can masturbate. There is also the videos, dvd's,products and chatlines with photographs thrown in to wet the appetite. It is no wonder that sex crimes and paedophilia has risen as it has.Even our soap operas are at it and we as a nation have been led into this unconscious sexual insanity in the name of freedom and the problems underneath the surface are eating away at any decency we have like a form of cancer.

Even the Police now think it's ok to let public toilets in certain parks be used for sex acts. What has gone wrong?

I'm no prude believe me.I've been around but this type of incident is an indicator of how far we as a nation have regressed and how some people are insensitive to the wider implications we face.

Jonathan Ross is not a stupid man.Neither is Russell Brand.I bet you they are aware now of their stupidity.I think perhaps they could re-direct their talent to point out the wrongs in our society. There are masess of people out there who listen to them and are influenced by them.In every problem lies a solution and in every challenge salvation can be found. Now is the time for that to be done individually and collectively so I wouldn't sack them I would point them in the right direction because from shame comes forgiveness and that can be a great benefit to us all.

The people who should be sacked are the production team who sanctioned the broadcast of the pre-recorded section of the programme containing the prank phone calls. Russell Brand is a well known loose cannon and whoever gave him the job on Radio 2 should have known that he was a high risk - but this was probably overlooked because he did after all achieve consistently good audience ratings for his show. It was only a matter of time, however, before he over-stepped the mark and that should have been monitored by the production team. What really is unforgivable is the fact that the offending section of the show, being pre-recorded, could easily have been pulled had the editorial team been on the ball. Then, Andrew Sachs could have been spared the embarrassment and given a proper, but private, apology which I'm sure he would have preferred. Brand and Ross could have been quietly reprimanded and the damage would have been limited. Broadcasting is a responsible business and it's time the Director General, as the man at the top, took his share of the responsibility. He and the entire chain of command down to the producer of the programme should resign.

Both of them should be sacked and so should the producer or director or whoever it was that authorised the recorded programme to go out on air. It was bad enough that the two of them played pranks but to record it and then have someone in authority pass it as playable on air is just not on.

If Brand and Ross want to play pranks then let them do it on their own time and no with the help of the licence payers fees. I think that's what is rattling a lot of people the fact that we are licence fees payer for the BBC.

The newspapers keep going on about the Sach's grand daughter playing in a band and the fact she has slept with Brand. I do not care if she has slept with the whole of British army it is her business and should not be broadcast over the radio!

Brand has already resigned and I think Ross should follow him, mind you who would employ him now? I do hope that as Ross is suspended it is without pay, lets see him play pranks when there is no licence fees money coming his way.

I have just heard on the tv that Licence fee payers are payng Ross £16,000 a day to stay at home. Somewhere in Answers someone has asked a question about help for a pensioner who needs help with heating bills, I rest my case as to why Ross should be sacked!

It's not the first time complaints about Jonathon Ross have been made to the BBC and some of the antics that Russell Brand has got up to on air are disgusting. The phone call they made is an outrage and these two have sailed too close to the wind for a long time and it's time they went. They're repugnant and a dreadful example to the young.

Okay Russel Brand has resigned and we await what Jonathan Ross will do. I am no prude but these people are paid to entertain us. It would be soooooooo easy to go on radio or TV and talk a lot of cr-p but most of us think better of it and I am sure your 'Joe Public' could do a better job so why the hell are we putting up with this sh-t? I certainly don't pay my licence to hear this rubbish which my family and neighbours would call the police for if I was doing it.

    Yes they should be sacked.

Surely now is the time for the BBC or perhaps the whole of television to review its standards.

Let's get back to the good old days of decent programmes I am not a prude but there is to much sex etc rammed down our throats.

Come forward another Mary Whitehouse I say.

Russel Brand should be sacked on grounds of having less comedy value than a fire at an orphanage, never mind anything else...

As for Ross? No supper before bed, and immediate cessation of chocolate rations.

as John M said better than I could.

I know of a similar story regarding an airnan war hero who had been terribly burned. The youngsters who tormented him probably thought it was 'just a joke'

I so wonder, and despair, at the mentality of seemingly 'normal' people who not only listen to this stuff but think it's funny, a laugh, only a joke.
