What does "Above & Beyond" mean to you?

In your own words, describe to me your understanding of "Above & Beyond". I've tried to search for a descriptive meaning on the net and cannot seem to find one.

    Above and beyond is what they use to say you do more than was/is neccasary. My dad is a soldier and he does above and beyond the call of duty.

    Above and beyond the call of duty is the phrase I usually hear it used in.
