what's 5+4(x - 1) = 3(2 + x)?

so i need help with that and it doesn't equal 5 and in the question it is not x and negative 1 its x minus 1.

Update:

its like you use the distributive property im good at it i just dont understand y its wrong because i did this on a test and i got 5 and the teacher marked it wrong so i have to do it correctly so please help me.

Update 2:

also i know 5 + 4x -4= 6+ 3x then i got 1 + 4x=6 + 3x is that right?then i subtracted 1 from each side so 4x=5+3x then i subtracted 3x so x=5 so can you tell me what im doing wrong.

Update 3:

also i typed the equation write and i know it should be 5 so i dont get why the hell my teacher did that.

Update 4:

thank you people so much and i was frustrating over why 5 was wrong. im gonna go 2marro at skool and yell at my teacher.

    Simplifying

    5 + 4(x + -1) = 3(2 + x)

    Reorder the terms:

    5 + 4(-1 + x) = 3(2 + x)

    5 + (-1 * 4 + x * 4) = 3(2 + x)

    5 + (-4 + 4x) = 3(2 + x)

    Combine like terms: 5 + -4 = 1

    1 + 4x = 3(2 + x)

    1 + 4x = (2 * 3 + x * 3)

    1 + 4x = (6 + 3x)

    Solving

    1 + 4x = 6 + 3x

    Solving for variable 'x'.

    Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.

    Add '-3x' to each side of the equation.

    1 + 4x + -3x = 6 + 3x + -3x

    Combine like terms: 4x + -3x = 1x

    1 + 1x = 6 + 3x + -3x

    Combine like terms: 3x + -3x = 0

    1 + 1x = 6 + 0

    1 + 1x = 6

    Add '-1' to each side of the equation.

    1 + -1 + 1x = 6 + -1

    Combine like terms: 1 + -1 = 0

    0 + 1x = 6 + -1

    1x = 6 + -1

    Combine like terms: 6 + -1 = 5

    1x = 5

    Divide each side by '1'.

    x = 5

    Simplifying

    x = 5

    Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!!

    okay first you start form left to right. But you do NOT ad 5+4, you multiply 4*x which equals 4x then multiply 4 times -1 so your problem should look like this now:

    5+4x-4=3(2+x) so now go to the other side and do the same. 3 times 2 equals 6, then 3 times x which equals 3x so your problem should look like this now:

    5+4x-4=6+3x Now all you do is combine like terms. On the left side 5 and -4 are like terms. So add them and you get 1. Now your problem should look like this:

    1+4x=6+3x Now subtract or add like this: 1+4x=6+3x

    -1 -3x -1 -3x So your problem should now be:

    x=5 That is the answer. Ask your teacher why you got it wrong.

    well the 5+4 isnt in parenthesis so it would be 5 + 4x- 4 simplified= 6 + 3x

    which is 1 +4x= 6 + 3x

    which when solved for X =

    x= 5

    checked is:

    5 + 4( 5-1)= 3(2+5)

    4 times 4 = 16

    16 + 5= 21

    21= 7 times 3

    21= 21

    therefore X= 5 is correct

    5+4(x-1) = 3(2+x)

    5+4x-4 = 6 + 3x

    4x - 3x = 6+4-5

    x = 5

    You were correct. Ask your teacher why it is wrong. Unless you typed the equation incorrectly on here, then x = 5 is the correct answer.

    Edit: Always remember, teachers can make mistakes when grading. I remember countless times when I knew I was right, and I went and asked the teacher and got the points that I deserved. It happened to me just last week in my college Calculus class.

    Edit again: A lot of these people are giving you weird (wrong answers)... they need to learn their order of operations lol.

    1/4x = 3 + 5 1/4x = 8 1/x = 32 x = 1/32 if you meant (1/4)x - 3 = 5 (1/4)x = 8 x = 8*4 = 32

    Wow your going on here to get answers for homework, dang I wish I could have done that when I was younger.

    5+4(x-1)=3(2+x)

    5+ 4x-4=6+3x

    1+4x=6+3x

    -1 -1

    4x=5+3x

    -3x= -3x

    x=5

    You need to subtract 1 from 6 which will give you 5, you need to get ride of the 3x so you subtract it from 4x which gives you the result of x=5

    5+4x + -4= 6 + 3x

    1+4x= 6+3x

    -1 -1

    4x=5+3x

    -3x -3x

    x=5

    i think that you are right and your teacher must have made an accidential mistake so if you still have problems with it, do all of the rest of your corrections and before class or a break or something go talk to your teacher and say... "i cant seem to understand why i got this answer wrong. Can you please help me out" and thats all

    5+4x-4=6+3x

    1+4x=6+3x

    x=5

    Your teacher is wrong 5 is the answer they must have made a mistake. The teacher probably added the 5+4 first thats not right though because in math you do multiplication before addition

  • 1)Distribute the 4 and 3

    5+4x-4=6+3x

    2)Combine like terms

    1+4x=6+3x

    4x-3x-6-1

    x=5

    3) plug in answer to check

    5+4(5-1)=3(2+5)

    5+4(4)=3(7)

    5+16=21

    21=21

    Therefore 5 is the correct answer

    The answer is x = 2.5.

    5+4(x-1) = 3(2+x)

    9(x-1) = 3(2+x)

    9x-9 = 6+3x

    -3x -3x

    6x-9 = 6

    +9 +9

    6x = 15

    Then divide each side by 6 to get the x by itself

    6/6x = 1x

    and

    15/6 = 2.5

    so

    x = 2.5
