You did the right thing. For the most part he said this as a way to tell you how much he cared. But clearly he was not ready to move on it.

When you put him to the test the reality of it hit home. It is always so much easier to contemplate what might be than to actually do it.

You did good. This will make him stop and really think about what he is asking you to commit to. For the first time he actually was forced to see it as something he needed to do and not just talk about it.

Unfortunetly I dont know your guy well enough to say if he will propose if you live together. the ring size thing is easy, get measured and leave evidence of it where he will find it. I printed one of those paper sizers, not 100% accurate but rings can be resized. I left it sitting at my size and what do you know.. he found out my ring size. simple enough.

Give him a 2 month deadline to present the ring. If no ring dump him and move on.

You were in the right to tell him... give him your size and a photo of the ring you would like- he can do the rest.
