How can we inform Americans that our enemies all over the world use these forums to gather information? ?
I very much enjoy this forum to express ideas and ask questions. But, occasionally I see posts that are either from our enemies trying to get free information or an uninformed American unwittingly giving the enemy dangerous information. Do people realize that more than 90% of the intelligence information gathered before an attack like 9/11 was gathered from open sources on the internet just like Yahoo Answers? Is there anything we can do to inform the general public about operational security?
1. The fact that there are many foreigners on this site is my point.
2. I'm not talking about limiting the internet, I'm talking about not giving away vital information an enemy might use. Just being aware!
It's not being paranoid if it is true!
I saw a post in broken english asking if KBR still works on a specific base in Iraq, that is what prompted this question. That is something the enemy could use as a piece to a bigger picture. Understand?
OK. I see where this is going. I guess the bottom line is that open sources will continue to be a great tool for al Qaeda and all the other organizations bent on the death of all Americans.

If united statesa. hadn't gotten into the wars, Britain could've been conquered. and no-one disputes that. call it what you pick for. ADDENDUM: truly, bypass returned and study what Churchill became into asserting on the time. He became into on his knees praying that united statesa. could get interior the warfare. And whilst the jap bombed Pearl Harbor, Churchill became into relieved, with the aid of fact he knew united statesa. could get into the warfare, and that the Allies could win. He had no illusions and no fake delight. and that i'm no longer insulting the British. Britain has achieved a great purchase for this international, which contains being the only u . s . a . interior the international (at one factor) who became into resisting the Nazis. in spite of the undeniable fact that that's a certainty. Britain did no longer have the generating base to maintain up with the Germans, nor ought to they look after their delivery against the U-boats, maximum exceedingly, sufficient to import all of the fabric they required. So American production and delivery helped the British, probably as much as American troops. no person is asserting that American troops fought greater advantageous or have been braver. i think of you're choosing a combat that no-one needs to combat.

Open source, unclassified collection is known to give up to 80% of the information that our enemies have on us.
Buy a shredder and shred everything. They definitely aren't above going through garbage from a military base to find information.

Given some of the mis-informed rubbish which gets posted on here masquerading as "fact" I think that YA is actually quite an effective mis-information tool for confusing the enemy!

I think if there were a serious breach of information in regards to national security, both the government and yahoo would shut the post down in a heartbeat.
And what are you referring to in terms of "dangerous information"? Most of I see posted in here in regards to the military is harmless (career fields, care packages and common information).
I don't see anyone asking for coordinates to a base or anything like that. If you do see these types of posts going on, then by all means, please report them!
Good Luck!

I agree that people need to remember OPSEC when posting here. Also I see people asking for contact information on a specific service member and then people are offering to look them up on the military databases and they have no idea who this person is, they could be a stalker.

They may get ideas of 'public opinion' from yahoo answers, but I doubt they'll get the kind of specific info they need for an attack. Besides which if you stop freedom of expression through sites such as this, aren't you playing into the extremist's hands by limiting our freedom and making us constantly live in fear?
Edit: Is this the kind of question you're worried about? Its still quite vague, but there is something slightly worrying about it I concede.

Maybe so, but I bet there's more people from other countries on this site than Americans, even the US section. They're everywhere. I don't know how we would limit the Internet. I don't see it happening.

I agree with you . when my husband was stationed in Germany we had classes on this stuff all the time I get really angry at people who don't practice OPSEC ! A little info here and there is all that is needed to give our enemies a leg up. watch what you say people none of it online is private!!

I'm sure the enemy is well aware of our security measures. They have no doubt tested them by now. They know their web sites are watched and that its difficult to get their money now. They probably know more about it than we do.

Considering the usual inaccuracy of most Yahoo answers, trying to gather intel here is more of a hazard to THEM than it is to US.
