Did you see Jesse Jackson's emotional response to the calling of the election? ?
I wondered what was going through his mind. Was he sad that it wasn't him? Was he feeling the success of all the marches he did with Dr. Martin Luther King and others finally paying off? Did he think that this country is finally moving past discrimination? I know he's a polarizing character, but he has done much throughout his career for people even though he has made some boneheaded moves and comments. Your thoughts?
I doubt seriously that Jesse Jackson will have an official role in the administration. Jesse Jackson, Jr. Will probably try to get Obama's Seat in the Senate. I think those of you who suggested that the torch has passed to a new generation of black leaders who won't need to talk so much about race are right. I think this election levels the playing field for everyone in many ways. There is still much to do but our country has grown and this is proof to me. That we voted for Barack regardless of the color of his skin because he was the best candidate.

I don't think anyone can truly understand what was on Jesse's mind right then and there. Just the thought of marching with Dr. King and basically have him die in your arms the man who first brought about change as far as breaking racial tides. Then witnessing some 40 years later a Black Man win a Presidential Election has got to be beyond emotional. I know he made some boneheaded comments and questionable moves in his lifetime. But I'm sure with the tasteless lynchings, shootings, beatings, and other discrimination acts he's seen during his lifetime, he felt some sort of vindication last night around 10pm.

yeah, i saw that, i was cracking up. the man was crying, thinking,,, hey whats wrong with me? i could have been a contender, i could have been a contender.
Thing is though, he and a few more black leaders seem to spout hate type preaching. the community needs a unifying leader not someone that will through gas on the fire. Maybe Obama will do it. This is definitely an interesting time were living in.

To answer your question;
Jesse Jackson was crying because he knows with the election of Barack Obama his gravy train has arrived. The tears were pure joy that he will never have to hustle companies out of millions of dollars with phony racial lawsuits and instead just receive free handouts from a Obama administration.

my thought is that he's a relic of the past. To the younger generation, he is more a symbol of tension than a release from it. I know he lived through hard times and made some brave decisions.... but the way he keeps bringing up the past makes it difficult for people to move on into the future. The younger generation has proved they are ready... if the relics of the past will just step aside and let us move forward.

It's probably all of your suggestions combined. Rev. Jackson has done many good things in his career. He also survived the hate and racism that ended King's life in the sixties. This was a historic election and Jackson is one of many who are overwhelmed by Obama's victory.

Jesse Jackson's and Al Sharpton's magnitude of importance has now dropped significantly. America has spoken and shown that they are not racist.
These two "so called reverends" will have a much harder time playing the race card from now on.

I thought it was strange given that Jackson didn't like Obama for the longest time. I have no idea when he changed his opinion or if he changed his opinion.
Maybe he was just crying out of jealousy.

everybody who kept claiming that the blacks have suffered through so much can shut up now since there's a black president. so now, blacks are equal. so let's just get rid of affirmative action! oh wait, obama will probably just increase that sooo much because he's such a liberal suck up who wants to spread the wealth and everything else. aka socialism.
and remember, folks, slavery ended about 150 years ago.

No he knows his career is over. He has been doing his best to keep the black man down by dividing the races and now that a black man is president he and Sharpton will not have the ability to continue preaching their racism.
