Can someone please explain one thing about gay marriage to me?

Can you please explain how a gay couple marrying can threaten, demean, lessen the importance of or in anyway negatively impact my marriage to my wife of nearly 30 years? Can you explain how anyone other than my wife and I can harm our marriage? Because I just don't get it. I don't understand how my marriage could mean less because two other people choose to dedicate their lives to each other out of love and respect.

Update:

The sanctity of marriage hearts of the couple not the gender of the couple.

Well let's go through this step by step. We first go into the many reasons why gay marriage is fought so passionately for. First, it is very much for love. Two human beings who love each other very much want to express that love in society's oldest institution that for ages has been the quintessence of everlasting love. Second, the benefits that marriage provides, while of course not nearly as important as love, is still vital for a couple especially during this economic recession. Third, gay marriage has become a much stronger message and symbol for the simple reason that both sides have put so much into it. If ever a conclusive stance is made on it, for whichever way, it will have dramatic effects on the gay community. Hopefully it will be made legal which will tell the country, and the world, that gay people are no longer on the fringe of society but rather right smack dab in the middle of it with everyone else. And you will see in none of those reasons was it ever for attention, I feel like you're stereotyping gay people, especially gay men, as dramaqueens that love to be in the spotlight, but that's just my opinion. Than we go into the civil union versus gay marriage debate. Some politicians use civil unions as a way to appease both sides, but ultimately resembles in many ways the segregation of blacks and whites in America before the Civil Rights movement. In Brown V. Board of Education, it was stated that "seperate but equal" institutions were not constititutional. Is marriage not a social institution? The idea that politicans think they can give gay people an obviously unequal substitution for marriage is quite honestly insulting. To sum it all up, yes, gay marriage has gone much farther than simply a union between two people of the same sex. It has become a movement for the gay community against injustice and as a statement that gay people are no different from anyone else and should be able to enjoy the same rights and liberties as the rest of the population. A necessity in the society we live in today is to get people to realize that homosexuality permeates all facets of the country and it is not always something negative. Marriage, the universal institution of love, community, and the base of family, is the best way to get people to realize that. Hope I helped with the paper:)

    Fear.

What if same sex couples did succeed in areas such as good relationship, good child raising and low child abuse. Plus in the event of a case of child abuse with in the home, the second parent reports the offence rather than what happens today with husband and wife marriage. Most of the time the wife says, no my husband would not do that, unknowingly her no actions is assisting him to abuse their children again?

What if their (the bigots) son was to decide he wanted to have his own same sex marriage?

    It’s a threat.

Not at the level spoken about, they are all hiding the truth, its more so at the levels that people don’t want others to know about. Their private, inner feelings. They just want gay issues to be hidden away and not confronted, like their do with their inner feelings.

    BTW.

That mommy girl. When you speak about Christian values, is that the same values that the people from the Baptist church in the good old US of A express.

I recall they scream abuse at the families of dead return soldiers, as the coffins are being unloaded. They stand in the background screaming that these dead men and women will burn in hell, etc.

Personally I would not be proud of being another Christians who spread hate.

There's no way it can be explained to you as rationalized by "others", because you are a sensible, thoughtful, progressive person with a sense of logic and intelligence, while most of the anti-gay-marriage supporters can only parrot what they've been told and what they've heard because the moron who said it happened to be waving a Bible at the time.

It would just ruin it, because adultry and divorce hasn't done this already...;)

This is for Mommy-What?! read my message above.

It would ruin your kids, kind of like desegregation whould ruin the nice White kids in the 30's. Gay people are here to stay, and not allowing them to marry won't make any difference what so ever...;)

to phat guy--you make no sense! Domestic partnership is not the same. Even if it was why not let them marry? They don't want to make other people gay, or bring it into schools they just want to marry! ;)

Well said. Piki agrees! Gays should be able to marry if they wish, its not going to hurt a straight couple in any way.

This is because, unlike all the people with gay-marriage-phobia, you are a secure and happy person with a functioning brain. I congratulate you and encourage you to run for political office.
