This is a question for athiests....?

If there is no God, or Jesus, then do you wonder why you are here and what your purpose is and where you are going when you die? Be serious.

Update:

ok, now entertain for a minute that there is an after life of Heaven or Hell. What do you say?

I don't know why I'm here in some ultimate sense, if that's what you mean. I'm not sure there's a "why," really just a "how." And I don't even know the "how," in terms of how the universe came to be and what the origins of life are.

The upside is, we are free to determine what our own purpose is. We have goals and loves (and the occasional desire to waste time and relax) just like everyone else, no God needed. My family, my friends, my job, my goals...none of that went away when I stopped believing in God. Life went on just like it always had, but without religious belief. That's it.

And when I die, I won't exist. A lot like before I was born.

    Seriously.

To teach Theists the spelling for atheists is atheists, not athiests.....

Anyway, jokes aside, why do you need a purpose? Nobody knows where they are going when they die, you can only speculate. When you speculate or indoctrinated to believe you will go somewhere, it does not mean you will definitely going there.

    Ok, I shall entertain you.

If there is a heaven and a hell, the heaven is controlled by an omnipotent being who is known to be a bloody tyrant and would stop at nothing to throw you to hell when you go against it's wishes, even though it gave you "free will". Knowing you would end up in Hell sooner or later, your final resting place would be hell.

I wondered once, but then I realized I could answer all of them right off the bat. We are here because Earth can support life and we evolved this way. It happened by chance and then....well, also by chance, that the right genetic mutations came up to get us where we are. Our purpose individually is whatever we wish so long as it doesn't hurt anyone or infringe on their rights. Animalistically, it's to survive until we reproduce. As a whole, there is no purpose. But really, it's the same thing as saying that you're here to serve Jesus...well then, why do you do anything else? Because you want to and you can and it's meaningful to you. There is nothing after you die. Your "soul", your personality is based on the brain, the body. Biological tendencies mixed with the way your parents and your environment shaped it. So there is nothing after you die.

    No, I don't wonder.

I am here because I was born. I assume you know the details

    of what that entails.

There is no one "purpose of life" that is universally applicable

to every human being. They get to assign that value themself.

When I die I cease to exist. It is the cessation of life. This fact

does not mean that my life has no meaning.

    Let's try an analogy.

You are entered into a lottery for 10 million dollars. You win,

but on condition that you never are able to win the lottery

again. So, does the fact that you will never again get to win

10 million dollars make meaningless the 10 million dollars

you presently have? I doubt it. If anything, you will value what

you do have even more, you will cherish all the opportunities

and experiences that the money will grant you access to.

Hope I've seriously addressed your question.

We are here because we are here.

My purpose is to create more copies of certain amino-acid polymers.

When I die all the evidence is that I will simply cease to exist.

I wondered about these things long ago. I worked out answers that appear to be logical and strongly tied to reality. Now I do not worry about them any more. If someone comes up with new evidence to affect my answers, then I will reconsider.

I have considered the Jesus/God aspect, but dismissed it as being totally ridiculous and having almost zero ties to reality.

Most atheists acknowledge that there was a man named Jesus who existed. They just don't see him as the son of God.

I'm sure everyone wonders about the purpose of their existence at one time or another. They just don't see it as anything related to an undefineable higher power.

To be honest, I'm just here, as stupid as that sounds. I don't think that there is some master plan for me. Hopefully I'll fulfill my goals in life, have a family, and leave the world a better place. To me, death is death. There is no afterlife. I think this world is amazing despite its flaws and I'm happy to be in it without the reward of a "heaven" someday.

    Serious answers follow:

From "Roll the Bones" by Rush

    Why are were here?

    Because we're here!

    Roll the bones

    Roll the bones

    Why does it happen?

    Because it happens!

    Roll the bones

    Roll the bones

    Purpose in life?

Life is what we choose to make of it.

As for when we die, we decompose. We get "recycled". E=mc2

  • You spelled "atheists" wrong

    Sorry

    OCD (CDO)

Umm, I'm agnostic...and yeah, sometimes I do. Then I decide that my purpose is to be a decent person and to try to better the world as best I can. Because I WANT to and feel that i SHOULD, not because I fear divine punishment. I care more about what I do in this life...while I'm here.

    yes of course i do

i dont knwo what else to say

    do you want detail?

if there is a heaven and a hell, presumable you mean the religious one, does that not mean there is also a god?

so i say , it exists, great, or not, cos we are all in big trouble

howeve,r there is always the possiblity of a heaven and hell esqe dimensions, that have nothing to do with god

    so, what do i say?

that there is a possibility they could exist and they are nothign to do with god
