Why do my light bulbs keep blowing out?

I have had 7 light bulbs blow out in the past week all in different rooms, is there something wrong with my electricity or is this coincidence? I rent this house and it is probably like 100 years old, I'm mainly concerned because I have 4 small children living with me and will not risk a fire, is this normal or should I call the land lord and have him send out an electrician?

By blowing out I mean, you turn the switch on and it gets really bright and just burns out!

Thanks for any info........

Typical house voltages are given as 120 volts, but this is the RMS voltage that is measured by meters. The actual peak voltage that you would see is approximately 170 volts.

As mentioned the most common causes of lights to fail are electrical shock, thermal shock and mechanical shock. So if you turn on a switch the electricity surges, the bulb heats up with the electrical surge and if there is someone stomping in the room above, even the best bulb may fail.

If the 7 lights were installed at approximately the same time and had the same use then they may fail at approximately the same time. It will also depend upon the quality of the bulb that was put in.

If you have surges, then the lights in your house will sometimes dim or glow brighter at times, if you are encountering this then you should consider having the electrical company check to see if there is a problem, if you just need peace of mind you may do it anyway.

You have replaced the bulbs, (maybe with the CFL bulbs), wait and see if there are further failures. If you do then you should investigate.

Not likely a short as this is not usually going to blow the bulb First I would check that you have the correct voltage bulb. I know that it sounds crazy but stranger things have happened and then if that is OK check the rate at which the bike is charging. If the charging voltage is just about 1 to 2 volts above battery voltage that is about OK but if it goes above say 3 or more above battery then the highest wattage bulbs will be the first to go Good luck

Seen this problem a lot. You need to have it checked, The voltage on lights bulbs are 120 volts. Your voltage is more than that like 126-129 volts. buy 130 volt bulbs and it wont do that.

For instance 60 watt at 130 volt bulbs. You might live close to power plant, But I would call power company they should check for free. Tell them you are getting power surges or spikes.

since it happened when you flipped the switch," that is when most light bulbs die" as the filiment is heating up. I think it is just strange coincidence. If they all blew out while they on , then it could be a surge maybe. just replace them and see what happens.I dont believe there is any danger. The key clue you gave is that they blew when you turned them on and not while on.

Check for correct wattage. But remember that this is the time of year when your house temperature is likely reduced. So, if a bulb is on the verge of breaking, that is something that could tip it over the edge.

maybe because u have the wrong type of light blub normally it takes a 60 watt but somtimes it takes higher watts or lower watts
