How do I keep my cat off the kitchen counters?

He is so curious at night and plunders around and tears up my plants. I don't keep any food out so he is not after that, what should I do??

Honestly, there's not much that you can do. You can try putting double sided tape, aluminum foil or bubble wrap on the counters to deter him, but a determined cat will jump on the counters anyway. Spraying them with water is only effective when you're present and watching them. When you're not looking, they'll be right back on the counter. I abandoned the idea of keeping them off the counters years ago. They know to stay off when I'm cooking, and if they do jump up when I am I just pick them up and place them on the floor. Otherwise, I keep antibacterial wipes handy and clean the counters frequently. They really don't jump on them that often since they know they're free to do so most any time. If they do jump on them, it's usually to get on top of the refrigerator or above the top cabinets to sleep. If yours is attracted to the plants, you might consider moving them to a spot that's out of reach, but that won't guarantee that he stays off the counters.

Trying to train a cat hey? Yeah good luck with that!

The only thing i can think of is a spray that you can get from pet shops/vets which has a smell cats hate - it doesn't make the room smell or anything - so spray some around your plants etc and it may deter him? Obviously don't spray on benchtops you prepare food on!

    Hope this helps?

Keep a squirt bottle with water in it handy and spray him when he gets up there. If it is only at night you may have to put him in your room or where he has access to a littlebox but not to the counters.

I saw on the show House cat Housecall that you should put metal trays on the counter and the cat hates the sound it makes when he jumps up on counter

cats don't like the feel of tin foil and bubble wrap, if you put that on your counters, it will stop a cat from jumping up there.
