I work at a furniture store and we sell mattress sets for $300 and $400 all the time. Here's what you do.
First you need to determine what size you want. Most mattress stores will use queen size for display and floor models.Call around and see if one of your hometown furniture stores or mattress store is having an inventory reduction sale,or a floor model/display model sale.Usually once a year the manufacturers change the design of the mattress out side cover.Sometimes they will close out their existing stock to be able to bring the new stuff in.
Just ask the salesperson, tell them what you want and what the most you are willing to pay.Bedding is usually very negotiable..Occasionally you can find a set that may be slightly soiled. There is nothing wrong with it,Just might have a smudge or two on it..Good luck and good shopping

Go to a place that sells mattresses and you will get a good deal on last years models since the year is ending. They change covers evry year for warranty purposes.I would even haggle with them on the price. They want to get get of it!Be sure it's Sealy or Serta though.
