They are both doctors. A chiropractor treats spinal conditions like back pain or sciatica. He/she uses natural methods such as manipulations and therapies. An Orthopedist treats the same conditions but uses medication and surgery. They both can diagnose your problem, take or send you for x-rays, as well as refer you to other doctors.
Often patients will see a chiropractor or physical therapist and if these don't help relieve their pain they then may want to consult an orthopedist.

An Orthopedist is a medical specialist with years of training.
A Chiropractor cannot write prescriptions and is mainly just able to deal with misalignment's of the spine and skeletal system through manipulation and massage.

An chiropractor is not a physician. They fool everyone by calling each other Doctors of Chiropractic or Sports Medicine.
My advice is to avoid the chiropractor as they can do more harm than good!
Chiropractors have to believe that everything causes conditions that only they can fix so they can convince patients that we can't live comfortably without visits twice per week.
I had a stroke last year as a result of chiropractic treatment and have since made it a priority to raise awareness of the dangers of chiropractic care. Please visit this website to read my story and similar ones of other victims so you may be aware of the risks and make an informed decision about treatment.

Either type of practitioner could address your symptoms; it depends on your personal preference. A chiropractor, or DC generally focuses on evaluation and treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, using a variety of manipulation techniques. Conditions such as back pain and headaches are particularly amenable to such treatment. A DO (osteopathic physician) is also trained in manipulative medicine but in addition is able to prescribe medications and perform more invasive procedures. Most osteopathic physicians have residency training in a medical specialty, so if you are wanting to try a DO for manipulation for treatment of your back pain look for one who specializes in manipulative treatment, or ask the office if he or she practices such treatment; if not, they should be able to refer you to someone who does.
