miscarried sometime after 20 weeks without knowing, now 10 weeks pregnant?

Question

my sister was pregnant with a baby boy.  she had her 20 week ultrasound and things look good. she was supposed to be due in late december.  she started seeing a new doctor who thought she was not as far along as her other doctor had said and made my sister get another ultrasound (she would have been about 32 or 33 weeks).  the doctor said she is 10 weeks and that she must have miscarried the other baby.  

how can this happen?  if you miscarried after 20 weeks, wouldn't you know?  could she still be carrying the older baby?  she lives in a different state and had no one at the appointment, so i am sure she was devastated and couldn't ask all these questions.

has anyone heard of this???  can anyone help us understand what happened?

i would go to another doctor to see if she gets another opinion.  That is so bizarre!  This may not be appropriate but would your sister have any reason to lie about pregnancy earlier than when she was actually pregnant?

WOW that sounds weird to me, at 20 weeks the baby is  a good 6 to 7 inches long, and a most a pound, i am sure if she had a miscarriage she would have known it, 

a couple of years ago i heard a story in the news about a woman being pregnant, of a month or more, and still her body dropped an egg and she was pregnant again of you would say that, i don't remember the term that its called, but its rare

If she was over 20 weeks, she would have had to have gone into labor and delivered a baby about 12 inches long and about a pound in size.... so no, she couldn't have. This new doctor obviously doesn't know what he is talking about.

Could the doc have possibly said she still had 10 weeks LEFT? That is all I can get from that. The other just seems impossible/

I have NEVER heard of this.

If she was over 20weeks pregnant, it would be a stillborn and not a miscarriage......the baby would be seen on the ultrasound if it was still in there.

i think she needs a second opinion.

This sounds crazy to me..
I am 38 weeks pregnant..
She would have been showing....And there would have had to have been some kind of miscarriage - ie- bleeding and clots..
This sounds weird..

wow thats horrible!!! i would for sure be looking for another dr. again. that is so messed up and seems so medically impossible. how tragic to be given such rediculously confusing information!!!
