Boasting about a poor quality, cheap tattoo?

Why do some people insist on showing off poorly done tattoos AND boasting about how little money they paid?

I work in a tattoo studio. Sometimes after quoting a tattoo for a potential client, the potential client gives a shocked expression at the price. He/she then proceeds to show me a large existing tattoo. Their existing tattoo is just AWFUL. Crooked lines, blow outs, faint lines, colors that just don't blend, lines that don't connect, etc. Then he/she proudly boasts, "Yeah. And I only paid seventy bucks for it!"

And I'm looking at their tattoo and thinking, 'Yes. And it shows. I can't believe you actually paid money for that.'

I've always wondered the same thing. I think most people like that just haven't been exposed to great work. These are the people that are surrounded by people that think the same way they do. So when they all show each other their tats, they think it's good work because that's all they know. But once they are exposed to great tattoos, great artists and such, they will realize that getting the cheapest tattoo isn't what's important. Hopefully they will learn soon enough.

Haha I know what you mean, I wish I went to my tattoo shop of choice to get my tattoo done. The tattoo shop i wanted to go to was backed up by 3 months, so I settled for another one. No one wanted me to go there, its mostly for kids who are underage and don't have a parent to sign for them considering they don't ask for ID to make sure your the legal age. Its not all that clean either, they had carpeting down (which I guess is bad in a tattoo store because it can carry germs??) and the tattooist was smoking while doing tattoos. Near the end of my tattoo the girls child was in the store complaining about wanting to go home because they were getting close to closing, both of the owners were cussing at their kids while dealing with clients and near the end of my tattoo she rushed so she could take her kid home, so now I'm stuck with cricked lines, blotchy spots and fading everywhere. I got two old fashioned butterflys on my back, i got them outlined and coloured in black so I don't think it will be much to fix, it just sucks that 2 months after my tattoo, I'll have to pay another $200 to touch up my tattoo when I already paid $200 to get them done. :\

Good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good. I have had people show me their tattoos and boast about the money they paid for it... then I show them mine done by an award winning artist, and they start to see the point.

Honestly, when they start to boast, I would point out what you would do differently and show them some of your previous work. Hopefully seeing GOOD art will convince them that what they paid so little for is, indeed, worth exactly what they paid for it.

I feel the same way alot of people come to me and ask me how much i would charge to go over a messed up tattoo and when i tell them they look at me and say wow thats more then what i paid for the whole tattoo and i simply tell people you get what you pay for if you pay for a cheap tat thats what you get!!!

i have 11 tattoos, all but one are professional. the one that isnt i got for free from a guy that had a homeaid tattoo gun. i boast about it because there are flames and it was his first time doing flames and for a homeaid gun doesnt look to bad.......now if i had a terrible tattoo i would be ashamed to boast about it

i have wondered the same thing! i am proud of all 10 of my tattoos, some were cheap but well done and some are expensive and well done.

Overall you get what you pay for.
