In recent history, the late Lee Atwater ("Boogieman") and of the last few election cycles, Karl Rove, were masters at creating hype over wedge issues that would rally the GOP base. These were definitely divisive tactics that were basically pandering strategies for votes. The other was using fear to frighten people, which worked perfectly for them after 9/11. However, the people have awakened and have determined this is not advantageous to them, their families, nor the country.

Divisive...people disagree. It's human nature. When Congress agrees people need to pay attention.
