Can you cite me a site where I can learn more about poetry?

All I ask of you is to post a web address that will give a good overview of poetic styles (iambic, pentameter, etc.) and a history of poetry, along with info/links where I can explore each one more intimately. I'm looking for more of a reference guide than a 'how to write poetry' guide.

I could grind through a bunch of websites using a search and learn nothing. I figured the best recommendations would be gotten from some people who know (that means you, Elaine :).

I love words but know zero about poetry. Can you help me combine these two interests by answering with your favorite poetry reference website?

Will this question get deleted like many of my others?

WORDS

Words

650,000 of them!

Shall I use every one?

Tapestry I can weave in any way.

Words

Audiovisual magic

Sensual, enigmatic

Touching all things, all days.

Words

Gently falling

Or forcefully jarring

Ultimately me, omega popinjay.

Words

Syntax & grammar &

Mispellings mean nought

In the end, I will have my say.

Update:

Neon, Thanks.

But I'm looking more for 'how poetry works' instead of 'read the great works of poetry'.

I personally like this lil site: I hope it works for you...

The sites already quoted are excellent, especially the Shadow Poetry site. For discussion on poetry in general, visit the following link: http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=utf-8&fr=slv8-&p...

The December discussion will center around a book titled Basics of English Studies, using the 36 page poetry section.

The site is currently being updated, but will be ready on Dec. 1

Simply go to wikipedia and type in the style of poetry you want to read about....iambic pentameter, Shakespearian sonnet, Petrarchan Sonnet,

Haiku...just anything you want to read about...to lear how, and why.

You can become a member of wikipedia for free...and it's a great site for research of any kind!

It will present everything you want to know.

Try this site, it is a beta site but has a lot going for it in the poetry section. http://www.shmoop.com/poetry/

    A good starting point.

Another site I like is: http://www.famouspoetsandpoems.com/

It gives you some background of the poets and you can easily scan by era.
