Why do Scientology critics call it a money-making scheme?

There are no individuals making money out of Scientology. Survey the critics pages and they don't even have any suggestions of someone who may have an 18 car garage. They do say that Ron Hubbard only started it to make money but in fact he funded the establishment of the Church himself and then left most of his money and property to the Church. Yes, we pay money towards our Church, but it's my experience in Scientology that all money is pretty quickly paid towards facilities for members. Does anyone have any evidence at all to the contrary?

Update:

I already know critics don't see any value in Scientology and feel that we shouldn't have any money at all. But can anyone support a claim that the purpose of Scientology is a money making scheme to make Ron Hubbard or any other individual rich?

That's a very good question, considering that we've undergone years of audits with the IRS and have been able to consistently show that we are not for profit. That means that no individual profits from the monies we pay for our services. I know for a fact that everything I contribute to my Church goes to social reform and benefit programs (list below) and to the support of the Church itself (building maintenance, phones, staff pay, etc, etc). This is just a fiction made up by those that don't want people to know that Scientology works and would open eyes to how people are told there's no hope when there is. People need to see the Documentaries called Psychiatry: An Industry of Death and Making A Killing: The Untold Story of Psychotropic Drugging. There's where the real money-making scheme is.

it is a scheme, 200$ to get some stupid theten levels and also the auditing device on ebay goes around 500-1500$? obviously a stupid scheme, L ron hubbard was a science fiction writer! and Xenu? a alien federation god galaxy? ok so you probably know the tv show South park. I know its a hilarious offensive show but theres one episode called " trapped in the closet" not sure what season maybe around 7-10 but this episode is not only kinda funny it actually explains well what scientology is and what they believe. should watch it if you havnt already

  • Scientology has created a need and then offers a service to meet that need. Just like a business does. What makes Scientology a scam instead of a legitimate business is that the need created is fake. There is no evidence to support any of the claims they make that relieve you of your money. Can you prove you are getting any benefit from their services other than feeling good about being part of a "persecuted" community?

The church isn't forthcoming with its financial records. However:

"With such large sums of money pouring into his own pocket, it was probably no coincidence that in 1972 Hubbard revised the governing policy of Scientology. In a statement which is still official Scientology policy today, he listed the twelve key points of Scientology's financial affairs:

    "A. MAKE MONEY

    B. Buy more money made with allocations for expense (bean theory).

    C. Do not commit expense beyond future ability to pay.

    D. Don't ever borrow.

    E. Know different types of orgs and what they do.

    F. Understand money flow lines not only in an org but org to org as customers flow upward.

    G. Understand EXCHANGE of valuables or service for money (P/L Exec Series 3 and 4).

    H. Know the correct money pools for any given activity.

    I. Police all lines constantly.

    J. MAKE MONEY.

    K. MAKE MORE MONEY.

    L. MAKE OTHER PEOPLE PRODUCE SO AS TO MAKE MONEY.

A small sack of beans will produce a whole field of beans. Allocate only with that in mind and demand money be made ..." 23 "

Obviously a critic will find something to criticize whether it can be supported or not. The whole point is to be critical.

If the IRS could find nothing to support their critical views and finally after extensive audits of the accounts of all Scientology Church and related secular organizations finally granted Scientology full religious and charity status. (After years of harrassment and denial)

If the German Govt is now dropping it's pursuit of a ban on Scientology after their Domestic Intellegence Service could find no evidence of any illegal activity or any other evidence to support the "ban" after over a decade of investigation , harrassment and descimination.......

It is obvious that critics of Scientology will continue to be critical of Scientology (and probably many other valid humanitarian activities, religions etc) for no other reason than that is their reponse to life in general......i.e. critical.

Asking them to support , justify or come up with any valid reasons

is futile and simply gives them another opportunity to spew out more criticism, which is basically what you got by way of answers to this question.

A money-making scheme that reinvests the money it earns back into the organization is called a business. The Germans were right...

    L. Ron Hubbard: "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion."

If somebody is dead they don't need money. Easy to give it away after you are dead. Everybody gives their money away after they are dead.
