Diabetes question - alternative meds ?

Does anyone know any health products that my fiance can take, he has type 2 diabetes and is on metformin.

Just wondered if any vitamins or other herbal products would help, thank you.

Update:

Ok thanks to everyone that has answered so far, my fiance has his weight and sugar levels well under control but we just wondered if there were any vitamins he could take to enhance his well being not to be taken in place of his meds.

You'll hear about lots of herbal treatments, but please don't try any of these methods without consulting a doctor. These herbs and potions are not controlled by the FDA, so they may not always be what you think they are. Many people think diabetes treatment and medication is some kind of evil pharmaceutical conspiracy. But if there was an effective vitamin or effective herb to treat type 2 diabetes, people would have found it by now. Messing with herbs to treat diabetes could be really risky business because high blood sugars destroy the body quickly and many complications can not be reversed. If your fiance's blood sugar is not controlled adequately, he may loose the ability to obtain and maitain an erection. Think about that before you try some herbal tea.

No, vitamins and herbal products will not help to cure or manage diabetes, this is not an instance where alternative therapy should be used at all. Also, don't allow the alternative therapy brigade to tell you otherwise. There are no vitamins you can take that will help, in addition or in place of Metformin.

The only way your Fiance can manage his diabetes is through a sugar controlled well balanced diet, ensuring he is as close to his ideal weight as possible and taking regular exercise. If he has been prescribed Metformin, he needs to continue taking it.

Herbal medicine has been around for many years and still remains a pseudoscientific approach to therapy. There is little scientific evidence to support the claims of its efficiency.

Herbal remedies do contain active ingredients. This is why some of it can be shown to have a physiological effect; it is also why the potential dangers from them are higher than with other so called alternative 'remedies.'

The problem is, many people think that because herbal remedies are natural, they are harmless; this isn't he case. It must always be remembered that there are potential dangers from using home made remedies or those prescribed by unqualified charlatans. The main problem is that are that there is hardly any regulation for this highly profitable industry.

I just can't understand why dear Rhianna who works so very hard to apply her vast store of medical knowledge in the cause of helping those with medical worries, gets so many thumbs down to her responses.

Yet again she has produced an excellent answer that many doctors would be pleased to have produced.

I have never really understood the desire to find alternatives to excellent, safe and effective medication. There seems in so many individuals an irrational desire to use quack remedies, with no basis for their consumption. Is it a fear that the medical profession by dispensing medication has some strange power over you that you wish to avoid?

No vitamins or herbal so called 'remedies' will contribute one jot to his diabetic management. 95% of type 2 diabetics are markedly overweight and dramatic improvement in their condition can be produced by the combination of weight loss and very regular vigorous exercise. You can't really get more natural than those 2 suggestions!

There's a ton of herbs and foods that can help manage diabetes. My mom went from being severe type 2 diabetes (blood sugar was averaging 20 per day) to being 4-6 now (she's off of the medication). Mind you she did it all under the care of her doctor, who was into finding alternative remedies for diseases that western medicine can't cure.

I know the main thing she was taking was Cinnamonum verum, which is a type of cinnamon (not the kind used in baking).

You should talk to a Certified Herbalist, or even better, a doctor who is open to alternative remedies.

"homeopathic" medicines do not work fast enough to be of any use to the diabetic.

in order to avoid damage to his body, those blood sugars need to come down QUICK, and stay down.

In addition to the metformin, he needs to pay CLOSE attention to his diet, getting more exercise, and losing weight.
