What sort of attitude should a Christian have towards autism?

Would you see autistics as lacking a theory of mind? If they don't believe in other human beings, how can they sin, and how can they accept Christ? Does that mean that Christians should believe more in the salience theory of autism, or something else? I used to work with autistic children at my church and i have often wondered about this. Does it just mean the "no theory of mind" interpretation is just incorrect or is there another answer?

Update:

I do think the "theory of mind" interpretation is wrong. On of the people diagnosed as autistic whom i know seems to crave attention, and i think it's more to do with stimuli not being filtered. It's just that the other view seems more popular.

I used to tutor and autistic kid who went to church every sunday and he would sing his church songs to me.

And he would say stuff like "Jesus sings that song" and stuff like that.

But I really saw no moment where he expressed any sort of free-thought on the matter. To me, it seemed like that was just something he did on Sunday, and they told him about Jesus and he repeated it back. I don't think he understood what it meant.

To him, Jesus was like another kid at school like him.

I myself , have the attitude that any one, small, medium or large, with a handicap, mental or physical, is a special child to God.. I believe they are a gift.. Children born with Downs Syndrome, and even autistic children, hold a special place in my heart.... If people would sit, watch and observe closely these children, I think they would be very surprised at what each of us could and would learn from them.. I believe ALL people have the sense of *being human* and in turn realize or know other humans do and are around them.. They just interact and display emotions on a more basic level... No fluff.. Just pure and simple.... I also believe they do not have to accept Christ.... Christ has accepted them and made them , again for lack of better word, special gifts..... A top functioning brain has nothing to do with the spirit.... the spirit is a whole different entity than the brain, or so I believe ... hope this makes just a tad of sense.... go in peace... God bless

My son is autistic and is one of the best Christians I know. What makes you think they don't believe in other human beings? My son has certainly accepted Christ so I guess the answer to your question that the theory is incorrect.

I'm cognitively and developmentally disabled, and even my own family members have got a really nasty attitude towards me - not just the people back in Britain! As you can imagine, i hate being around other people, and i hate being in any sort of environment as well because i just feel really unsafe and unsettled just being around other human beings! It's okay for all those normally functioning people without any brain disease or brain problem to show hatred towards the brain disabled and see us cognitively and developmentally disabled "retards" as a complete waste of space and a burden, but no one seems to understand or even care about how frustrating it is and how much of a real unusual constant struggle life is for autistics, for example; and no one even bothers to at least try to imagine or understand how much suffering these brain disabled people are going through. It's easy for all these neurotypicals to tell us autistics to stop dwelling on our condition, but how would they feel if they were victims of some devastating genetic brain disease which they were made to battle throughout life? So as an autistic, you can't blame me for feeling really depressed, miserable, and bitter about life because i feel that life has been very cruel to me and to others in my situation! No human being on Earth should even be allowed to have something like autism or any other neurological brain disorder in the first place, because it's not very fair on them or their families. But at the same time, that doesn't mean that autistics and other brain disabled people should be treated like dirt by normal people or treated differently in the way human beings would expect to be treated.

We cannot know for sure whether a person with any sort of mental handicap, like autism, can accept Christ or not. We do not understand their inner thoughts, and have no way of knowing that His message makes sense to them. All we can do is accept them, love them, care for them, and trust that God is just.

I believe that he would NEVER create a person incapable of receiving salvation. Either the person has the capacity to choose, or God has another method for them. We can only trust God, and know that he is both just and loving.

Our problem in society isn't that we lack passion, but compassion.

Christians should be compassionate towards people who are autistic. For that matter, non-Christians should, as well. We're all the children of Providence, and we all should be treated with love and respect. Whether we're deserving (that is, people in general) is quite another matter.

Many of us believe autism is caused by vaccination. Will YHVH hold accountable people who are unable to do better? I doubt it. On the other hand, eternal life, salvation, is offered as a gift by the Savior YAHOSHUA, and no one who does not accept that gift will have eternal life. There is no perpetual torture, and sin and sinners will be burned in the lake of fire that cleans the earth so YAHOSHUA can make all things new, and very good. My best guess is that the autistic will not be resurrected with either the righteous or the wicked. However, I am confident that YHVH is just, and however He handles it, it will be right.

Christians would display the same type of attitude toward anyone we are all human autism is a condition that doesn't define and or limit the person capabilities to function and think and rationalize maybe they do things differently then we would perceive God loves us all

  • Well there is just hope. Just as we hope that babies go to heaven when they die because they no better and are to young. It is the same way with mentally handicapped people. They could be put in the same category and we just have to leave them in God's hand's.

    Care for God's creation.

They are humans too, just with an illness. You wouldn't act badly or consider less a mentally handicapped person or someone with alzheimer's, just because of a mental illness.
