Is this right? Should my school be doing this?
Okay, so I go to this all girls catholic high school. (poor me. i know.)
So, they keep trying to show that we are independent women and all that, but get this:
The Christmas dance requires that you have a date. You cannot go unless you get a guy to go with you. Now, I know that might not sound too bad, but what if you can't find a date, or better yet, you just want to go with friends.
And not only that, but it has to be a male date. One of my friends last year was gay, and they wouldnt let her go with her girlfriend.
So isnt this kind of discriminatory to both gay people and single people.
If we are independent women, don't we have the right to participate in a school function without having a date?
I don't know, but me and my friends are not happy about this. In fact, I was even asked this year to go by a guy from another school, but I chose not to go because I really dont like what this dance is trying to promote.
Don't worry, I'm going to go to the dance at his school instead, because they accept all people, couples/or not.
So, what do you think. Am I being stupid, or should something be done. If yes, then what?

Your parents and the parents of the other girls need to contact the school en masse with a resounding "NO". My daughter was not allowed to date until she started college! I am sure other parents feel this way also. My kids went to a catholic grade school/jr high. (No catholic high school here.) I am 46. If you appeal to the older parents, I believe they can kick up enough fuss to get the ruling changed. There are still some of us old catholic women with traditional beliefs out there, find them.

Have all the girls (or outside supporters) who are apposed to this rule sign a petition to end it and give it to the head of your school.U guys are right, they are sending mixed messages. They shouldnt tell u to be independant and then have u depend on a date to get into the dance. Nor should they discriminate on homosexual ppl.
Good Luck!

I think they should allow you to go alone or with friends. I don't think they should allow gay couples to attend together as dates. It's a Catholic school for goodness sake. In that arena, they can do what they want.

You aren't being stupid. The school is. People should just boycott the dance. Or write to your local paper and tv station to put pressure on the school.

There's nothing that can be done. It's a catholic school; they can run it anyway they like. What they like is uniformity and bigotry, which ought to tell you something about the catholic religion.

Standing up for your beliefs is not stupid. You could write an editorial in the school paper regarding this topic and see if it gains traction.

I most certainly dont agree with it. But they are a private school and can do whatever they want unless/until enough parents/alumni/funders complain about it.

to me, yes, this is morally wrong. but since your school is not federally funded, it's not like you could make them change anything through suing or such things...

thats ****** up!
i'm not gay but i would think thats still wrong and who knows, maybe the gay person could sue...
EDIT: oops i forgot they would censor me. lol...
