Alcohol and Native American Indians?

I saw on Oprah that Dr Oz says that some asians and Native Americans do not have the enzyme to digest alcohol,. So what happens if an Indian drinks, compared to us Caucasians that have the enzyme? Whats different?

while this may be true of some people its not true of all. we as a race of people are not genetically inclined to alcoholism any more than any other race. this is yet another lie spread to make us seem inferior. there are drunks in all races.

This is partly true. 100 years ago sure. It also can be said about the antibodies of all the diseases you Caucasians brought over. Same with things like refined sugar and flower, which caused a huge jump in diabetes in our peoples. Caucasians/Europeans had alot more time to build up your bodies to such things before we ever did. You gotta remember that Caucasians were drinkers long before they ever hit the great land.

That enzyme you are talking about is an actual gene we all have. In cultures like Chinese and the Japanese, and major Europeans, have drank enough over time to mutate the gene to break down alcohol, and also over time to create a gene to protect yourselves against the addiction to it. BUT this is a gene that is mutated, not everyone has the mutated version, some still carry the original gene, which is why there are drunks in every kind of nationality.

There are 2 enzymes used by the body to digest alcohol

Ethanol (pure alcohol) is converted by alcohol dehydrogenase to Acetaldehyde (which is reactive – toxic, Increased concentration → flushing, fast heart beat, hyperventilation, panic, distress)

Then Aldehyde dehydrogenase converts it to acetic acid, which creates the more pleasant symtoms and allows it to be excreted

Some people lack the 2nd enzyme, allowing the buildup of nasty toxic Acetaldehyde

Diabetes is usually treated through a combination of diet (low sugar), exercise and medications/insulin. Milder cases can be controlled with just diet an/or exercise while more severe cases require meds or insulin as well.

If anything, the amount of social ills is more of a factor of substance abuse especially for those on the rez. Enzymes, that's funny.
