9 week old bowel movement is green?

His b.m's are hard and green. Does anybody know what that could mean? He is both breastfed and formula fed. I have a doctor appointment for him this Friday.

Update:

Oh, the reason I both breast feed and formula feed is because for some reason absolutely no milk is producing from one breast and the other just can't keep up with his needs but I'd rather give him some mother's own than none at all :)

green means an iron rich diet, which is normal for formula. Talk to the doctor if you like, but it's nothing to be concerned about.

It is more than likely the formula causing the hard poopies. The baby's digestive system is not built naturally to digest formula as it is the breast milk so constipation could be the problem.

You can easily wean your baby from the formula to prevent further complications. It just requires nursing frequently and a little xtra effort but it's well worth it.

(I'm giving this information assuming you do not have any severe medical problem that may prevent you from producing enough milk or that you haven't tried all possible options to increase supply :). I just think both of you will be much happier if baby can be provided strictly with breast milk)

The above link has great info on weaning from supplements and tips on what to do to increase your milk supply. This includes frequent nursing and pumping. Check it out and give it a try :)

Good luck at the doctor's appointment!

Breast milk is perfectly formed for baby and unless you are on some kind of medication, or diet which could be affecting him too it is not likely to be the breastmilk.

It is probably the formula; but I expect you have very good reasons for feeding with both methods at this age. You will need to discuss this with your doctor, he may have an allergy or intolerance to one or more of the ingredients, you will probably need to investigate alternative formula options.

I used both methods for all 3 of my babys, 1 bottle of formula a day for all of them -- no probs just the best option for our family.

Stick to your decision unless you yourself feel you need to change.

    Good Luck.

Don't listen to Isabel's Mom that is SO untrue... anyways my BF daughters poop also turned green at about 2 mths and never really went back. At first her doctor was saying maybe a virus or she wasn't getting enough to eat and he SUGGESTED supplementing with formula. At that time I was not ready to, but her poop has been green pretty much since then. Her weight gain is above average and she isn't sick. It just happens some times. I have talked ot many mom's who's babies had the same thing.

As for the hard poop, sounds constipated to me. Try dark Karo syrup or a little bit of prune juice ( not to much he's to young) just maybe mix a few tablespoons in with his bottle. GL!

How much formula is he getting? If he is primarily breastfed green can be a sign of too much foremilk and no enough hindmilk. And if it's hard it's a sign of constipation.

I'd stop the formula and breastfeed him on demand, his tummy will thank you!

I can't speak for formula fed babies, but both my breastfed kids had poo all the colours of the rainbow, lol....but seriously, sometimes it as yellowish, other times it had a greenish tinge to it.

The green color is ok, but since it is hard, he must be constipated. It is most likely the formula causing this.

Sounds normal...The color is from the iron in the formula...As long as in is not Black or Bloody
