What is the best way to prepare one's self for the physical demands of working in retail?

The standing, lifting, walking, repetitive movements, and trying to concentrate when one is on cash register duty....?

Wear good sneakers with an arch support. If you look like a dork, it's okay.

Your legs will hurt you for the first week or so, unless you are used to standing for 8 hours at a time. There is not really any way to get around this; just grit your teeth and take some tylenol until your leg muscles get stronger.

I had a friend who trained himself before basic training and I think you are smart to train before the demands of retail. All back and leg strengthening training. standing for extended periods...like even while watching TV, lifting mild weights, learning the right ways to lift and to do the repetitive motions so you do as little damage as possible, working on games and other things you need to concentrate on w/ noisy background.

No matter what you do you cannot prepare yourself because every day is different. I work for cvs its good sum days and horrible like yesterday. I had to ring do photo customer service passport returns all with one other person helping me for 5 hours. Sucks big time If you do it please don't stay for long.
