Does my kitchen disposal need to be replaced?

I have a disposal in my kitchen sink, and in the past month, it has gotten to the point where every time I turn it on, it doesn't move and just hums.

If I safely stick a long steel rod down in it and manually turn it, it usually kicks on after a few turns and grinds normally.

There does not appear to be anything stuck in it that might be causing it to jam, and obviously since I can get it to run, it's not an electrical or breaker issue.

I don't know how old it is as it was already in the house when we moved in 2 years ago.

If you have experience with this or do repair, I just need to know if I just need to replace it, or if you think there's an issue which could be more easily and cheaply fixed than a replacement.

I should add we are in the process of selling our house, so while the disposal does need to be working normally for the new owners, I don't want to spend the $$ to replace it if I don't have to.

Thanks!

My first suggestion would be to use a wooden dowel or spoon instead of a steel rod.

It sounds as if the motor is having a hard time starting, which makes me think that the area between the brush and rotor have corrosion on them, which leads me to believe that there is a leak in the seal. At that point, I'd replace the unit as the seals are difficult to replace well.

I AGREE WITH MASSIVE MAN, it has seem to many bones, replace it try and get one of same type.

Now adays that will be hard to do .

Look at the sink from under and look at the mounting, try and get the same kinda, most nowadays are twist on's not a hard insitallation

Sounds like motor problems. I would replace it with the lowest horsepower disposer you can buy. It will work and be new, and not really expensive.

The motor is seizing. Time to replace.

Does it have a Reset button on the bottom? I tried that once, it worked. I hope this helps.
