I just found a certificate of common stock that my dad gave me years ago. How do I find out about the value?

It's for 109 shares of Public service company of New Mexico from 1988. There would have been stock splits and stuff? I don't know anything about this.

Public Service Company of New Mexico is now a subsidiary of PNM Resources. I suggest you start by going to

    http://www.pnmresources.com/investors/faq.cfm

and click on the plus sign to the left of the question "Do you have another question that hasn't been answered?" That will bring up a form you can fill in ask.

If they are not able to answer your question I suggest you contact the stock transfer agent at

    BYN Mellon Shareowner Services

    PO Box 382009

    Pittsburgh, PA 15212

    Phone: (877) 663-7775

    or at the website at

    https://vault.bnymellon.com/isd/links/contact.asp?...

It may be worth noting that PNMXO stock can still be traded on the pink sheets. The last trade was December 1 for $68.25 per share but, as you have noted, there may have been stock splits which would have changed the number of shares you own.

Take it to your bank and have a banker find out?

If the stock is publicly traded and you know the symbol you should be able to look it up on yahoo Finance. Just type the symbol into the search box "get quotes"
