When is a Fetus Alive?

For all those people that think abortion is murder etc and feel the need to vocalize this, P!ss off and leave me alone. I do not need to hear that. It has nothing to do with what I am going through.

I am currently carrying twins, of which one is developing normally. The other, is not. I am trying to get my head around whether I consider this baby to be alive or not.

My baby has no heart, no lungs, in fact the only organs it has is a neural tube, therudimentaryy formation of a brain, and some gastric organs that are growing outside the body rather than inside.

Is this baby alive because it has the potential to develop thought? or is it not, as it has no heart lungs and, well no real head even.

What isevery oness opinions?

Update:

Thankyou to those who have offered thier opinions.

To those who have spoken to me as though I am considering aborting... do you have any brain function of your own?

I have explained that I am looking to find a way to class this baby in my own mind as alive or not.

I am not going to abort. I cannot abort. I am carrying monochorionic, diamniotic twins. I am FORCED to carry both of these babies as long as i possibly can for the sake of my healthy child. I cannot do anything to help the healthy twin, or 'deal' with the other twin even if I wanted too.

I am forced to carry a child that will never live outside of womb, I am forced to encourage it to grow, and allow brain formation even though it's death is certain.

By carrying this baby I am getting closer to murder than I ever would by terminating, cause at the moment it has no indepedant brain function, but there is a likelyhood that my body will give it that.

Update 2:

There is no chance of a functioning heart and lung no matter how hard I pray and to which god.

This baby will not live outside me, ever, and that is not through any choice I have made.

Update 3:

To those who have shown me support and strength in face of looking at the option of abortion though, thankyou. I wish I could make that choice. It would make things much easier to deal with on so many levels. It would potentially save the life of my healthy twin which currently has a less than 50% chance of surviving past 30 weeks.

Honey, you know these things are incompatible with life so in reality this baby is already gone. No amount of intervention will develop what doesn't exist. I don't know what your perinatologist is recommending you do, or if that twin is affecting the healthy twin, but put your mind at ease, concentrate on the baby that will survive. Whatever you do will be the right decision for you and your family, regardless of what the world thinks. Much love to you and yours.

A fetus is amazingly lots alive. Technically, that's a "fetus" until eventually delivery, while it turns right into a new child toddler. no count if or no longer you experience existence starts at concept, after listening to a heartbeat, or after delivery is a controversy of perosnal opinion. some answerers have raised the question that a fetus can't proceed to exist outdoors the womb. nicely, sure it could. A 36 week fetus is totally in a position proceed to exist outdoors the womb. yet, what's the definition of "survival?" A 36 week fetus can proceed to exist merely besides as a 40-one week fetus or a 2 week previous toddler. yet, survival for this form of youthful human potential some form of parental or different help. No new child will proceed to exist with out help. Neither can a 2 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous. Can your 8 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous proceed to exist on his/her very own? those are the grey areas: while does existence start up (at concept, after the heart beat is heard, after delivery?) what's the definition of "survival?" inhaling your guy or woman? Feeding your self? Making your guy or woman money to pay to your guy or woman existence? Its a count of opinion.

I am so sorry to hear your story it really is a hard call but I would say it isn't alive being it has no heart or lungs it wouldn't be fair to you or the other baby not abort. I pray for you and your family and I can only imagine what your going through.Good luck

First of all, this must be super hard for you and I am sorry that you have to go through this. Well, in my opinion, I would let the baby live for as long as it can, just so you can say that you gave it your all to this baby and treated that baby the same as the other. If there is a brain, I would just go with it and see what happens. Of course you need to do what it best for your other thriving baby, but give the baby a chance. Nature in the end will know what's best. Take Care and all my blessings to you.

I just feel if it has a heartbeat it's alive. I mean they say plants are alive even though they have no heartbeat or brain processes or anything of that sort, so if a plant can be alive, than an unborn baby can as well. Of the baby has no brain, just a formation, and has no heart and cannot beat and has no lungs and cannot breath once born then I wouldn't call it alive. Sorry about your situation. Good luck.

It has no heart or lungs, it will not survive the birth, period.

I would be more concerned about the possible impact it could have on the healthy twin.

It is alive, but not viable

    That's my opinion.

If one of your babies is not developing normally (which I am sorry to hear about) then you have to make the choice as a mother what to do. Don't (try) not to worry about what other people think. You need to do what is right for you and this baby. Plus you have one that is developing fine and you need to think about that child as well.

Congrats on your pregnancy, and again sorry to hear about one of the babies:(

Very controversial. I believe when a fetus can sustain it's own life outside the womb taking it's first breath then yes it is alive. Even though it is "alive" inside the womb it is not self-sustaining.
