Most of the previous posters are trying to either mislead you or scare you.
Yes the courts do take a very dim view of anyone assaulting a police officer however,a lot would depend on the seriousness of the actual assault. If the offence of Public Disorder was under section five it is considered fairly minor and usually an assault on a police officer means probably something happened whilst you were being arrested and would be looked upon as serious but not serious enough to warrant a custodial sentence.
You will probably be given a stern warning by the Magistrate and given a big fine and, maybe some form of community work or probation although,I doubt if you will be given probation. You will however have yourself a criminal record now and,an apology to the officer would look good in court. You need to speak with your solicitor about that.

Well the punishment really could be anything including a jail sentence depending on what damage you did to the police officer, you'll always get a tougher punishment because it was a policeman you hit , i think the best thing to do would be as someone else suggested go and apologise and why not have a really good think about your drinking, if it's that bad that it's causing you problems with the law then maybe it's time you had a serious think about going along to alcoholics anonymous to get some help to bring your drinking under control, you know before you land yourself in even deeper trouble.

The starting point for assaulting a police officer if you`ve pleaded not guilty but been found guilty after trial is a short [max 80 hours ] unpaid work requirement in the community. This assumes no injury caused. In your case if you plead guilty, show remorse and having no "previous" you could be fined up to a week`s wages which would be a "good" result for you.

An assault on a Police Officer is considered to be a very serious offence. More so than on a non-police officer. usually punishable by a custodial sentence.
From now on you will become targeted by police officers on/off duty. Talk about police harassment.

I think that it will depend on the seriousness of the assault, they consider grabbing hold of a arm as assault that would clearly not be as serious as punching one in the face.
Were you not given a option of having a solicitor when you were charged, you should seek legal advice now if this mater is going to court

You will probably get a big fine if you show that it was out of character and say sorry.
One thing for certain you will get more than the officers who murdered Charles Mendez
Good Luck and get a good solicitor who has dealt with this kind of case before.

In the United States
?
You are given 5 days in jail
.
With your thumb duck taped to the side of your hand .
.
And when you have to go take a what ever in the bathroom
.
You will remember why that thumb is so important for and will remember that the judge said the next time the time in jail will be doubled
.
Its the sit down one that had the bad time in doing thing with out a thumb

As an officer in the US I can say the UK and US laws are very similar.
A court can order anger management, heavy fines, or some time in jail.
The courts frown strongly upon ones resorting to violence, especially when involving alcohol.
