Who decided the Pop Idol people would be singing Hallelujah ?

I'm sure Jeff Buckley will be spinning in his watery grave, while Leonard Cohen counts his money as these talentless pop wannabes ruin one of the great songs.

Was Leonard being prophetic when he wrote the line "but you don't really care for music, do you ?" - and was he aiming it at Simon Cowell ?

Update:

I probably mean X Factor - i can't remember which is the latest version. I just heard that one of those talentless shows was covering the classic song - and it made me feel sick.

Well of course Simon Cowell organises the show and its basically up to him what the winner will sing as he's the one who employes them on the one year contract, he's more than just a judge.

However, I think they would need some legal confirmation to say it's alright for them to use this song and I'm pretty sure the music department behind Simon Cowell's music industry have picked the song along with Simon.

What is even more remarkable is that anyone sings any of his unlistenable tuneless hispter rubbish.Old Leonard is truly the luckiest old geezer that ever pretended to write songs.
