My dog is foaming at the mouth, he hasn't been around other dogs to catch rabies, what else could it be?

Can rabies be caught by animals even though they haven't been around other dogs, is it only contagious from host to host or can it be obtained by the animal through another way?

Dogs will "foam" and drool excessively when they are under stress.

Could this be the case with your boy?

Good luck,I hope all is well soon.

Source(s): My vet when my Amstaff was doing this soon after I rescued her.
  • It can only be spread through saliva. Outside of the host animal rabies virus dies quickly, although deadly it is a pretty fragile virus.

Lots of things can cause foamy mouth. Poison, seizures, excitement. Max foams when he's excited. When I was gowing up my dog Jake made the mistake of trying to pick up a toad, the result was some weird faces and a foamy mouth. After that day you could always tell when a toad was near, he'd start foaming.

When it doubt the vet is only a phone call away. If its possible your dog had a seizure or has gotten into poison, get him to a vet right away.

birds very not often get rabies and because your dogs has had his pictures all is sturdy and fantastic. as far because of fact the foaming on the mouth this could take place in specific circumstances while the dogs is on the industry in touch with specific toads or frogs. they positioned off a secretion that motives dogs to froth on the mouth. uncertain what he could are becoming into yet once you're taking a backyard hose and flush out his mouth the foaming will probable end. shop an eye fixed on him nonetheless and if he ought to start to exhibit any unusual or unusual habit, call your vet and take him to an emergency health center as quickly as available.

try and check your dogs mouth/throat to see if something is caught. you may need a check by the vet. i dont think your dog can catch rabies if it has not been in contact with anything. has your dog had the rabies vaccine? by law dogs need it

Your dog doesn't have to catch it from another dog...he could catch it from any animal he's had contact with that has it. Even if you let him in the back yard or something and an animal got to him he could have it.

I would make sure there isn't anything caught in his throat and his toungue isn't swollen...then call the vet.

Is your dog sick (which you know what the answer will be) or has he been scenting (using his nose & mouth searching the ground or air), which would make foam if he does it for a lengh of time intensely.

Better take him for a check up by a good vet. If you love your dog this is a good time to have him seen.
