Why would Time Magazine name Obama as Person of the Year?

All he's done - all he's EVER done - is get elected. He didn't vote most of the time in the senate, he hasn't accomplished a darn thing yet, all he's done are made a bunch of promises that he's already started to backpeddle on. Shouldn't Time have picked someone who's actually accomplished something?

Update:

Yes, Obama has given hope to millions of people. And when he lets them all down by failing to keep his promises, when his policies devastate our already financially troubled country (and world), when he's shown to be the corrupt politician that he's suspected to be, those same people will be even MORE cynical about our country than they are now. When a Messiah is shown to be a sinner like the rest of us, those who followed him are filled with even more despair than they had to begin with.

Time magazine really loves Obama! I just counted and so far he has been on the cover 14 times so far this year! This issue will make it 15!

His face was on the cover on these dates: (Sometimes with other people, usually the cover just featured Obama)

Yeah, I guess becoming the first black President of the United States isn't much of an accomplishment.

I mean, it's not like only 50 years ago black folks were forced to use seperate drinking fountains and attend segregated schools. It's not like racism has played a huge role in the lives of all Americans since the days of slavery.

And it's DEFINITELY not like the election of Barak Obama will give hope to millions of Americans who now realize that they can make their dreams come true if they work hard enough for it.

    *rolls eyes*

Jimbeaux: You complain that Time has picked him as "Person of the Year" even though he hasn't "accomplished a darn thing". Then, you list a bunch of negative "accomplishments" which he hasn't made yet either: He hasn't let anyone down, and he hasn't been shown to be corrupt. Please make up your mind... do you care about what the man has actually done or not??

Maybe it's because he has captured the attention of the world.

Maybe it's because he beat a democratic candidate who was thought to be a shoe-in for the nomination and a well known republican opponent, despite the odds against him.

Maybe it's because he has made history.

Maybe it's a combination of all that and more.

Source(s): Honestly, I can't think of anyone who would've been a better choice. who's your pick for "Man of the year"?

I did not vote for him, but to have an african american man, with little (or no) expierence defeat the Clintons and then the Republican Party is an amazing feet that i hope the country dosn't regret. He should get man of the year.

Newly elected presidents always make the cover. It's about a person being able to effect history in some why....good or bad.

Person of the Year has nothing to do with accomplishments. Popularity will certainly win you Time's person of the year award.

They gave the prize to Adolf Hitler similarly, he was very popular and he came to power, suddenly he was Time's Man of the Year.

It will sell a ridiculous amount of copies why wouldn't they? Hitler was once Time Magazine's man of the year, until he started all that messy invasion and genocide stuff, but they don't like to bring that up.

    Because they can.

Start your own magazine and name whomever you want as Person of the Year.
