Bicyclists on curvy 2 lane roads. What would you do?
I live on a curvy, hilly 2 lane country road. There are no shoulders on this road and steep drop offs to the sides. The speed limit is 45 mph. The road is 8 miles long, and I live about in the middle.
I have a question about bicyclists. Quite often, as I am driving to or from work or the store, I will come up behind a bicyclist in my lane. It scares me when this happens around a blind curve.
My question is, what do I do when this happens and there is a vehicle coming the other way? I can't stop fast enough to not hit the bicyclist, and who wants a head on crash with a large truck? The only other option is to drive off the road, which may be off of a cliff.
The only bicyclists I see on this road are in their Spandex riding gear. I know they are just riding for recreation. Not going to work. There are many trails, paved and otherwise to ride for fun. I ride a bicycle myself, and I only ride the bike trails, just for the reason I mentioned.
I am not saying that bicyclists should not have the right to ride on the road. I want to know why some will put themselves in obvious danger.

Slow traffic cannot legally hold up drivers behind them when five or more cars accumulate. Bikes have the same rules as cars. They will, therefore, be obliged to move out of the way when they can so faster traffic can pass. They would be considerate if they cared at all. They only seem to care when one of them gets killed doing this stupid stunt.

I slow down.
That is what I do. I have a similar situation.
It's a very poular route.
I don't have a steep drop, but stone walls and big trees hurt too.
The other difference is the speed limit. Mine is 40.
It could be as simple as thinking "If I'm in danger, it's when someone else breaks the law". Which is, for a fact, true.
I've been told many times that riding a motorcycle is dangerous.
The only time I've been hurt was when a driver failed to follow the law.
All that aside, you have the advantage. You know to expect a hazard which gives you a better opportunity to avoid it.

I see the same thing where I live and even though we need to share the roads its in my opinion that this cannot be done on many streets that we live on and the only solution is to make a sidewalk or pathway for them.....But why do they put themselves in such danger, again I believe that many of them are just risk takers..........
