If you have seen the movie, Edward and Emmett collide in mid air when they leap to catch a ball. When their bodies meet, a large explosion of sound erupts and, to the human ear, sounds like thunder. If someone was out, say, gardening on a sunny afternoon and heard what they thought was thunder, with no sign of clouds or rain or a storm, what would they think? The Cullens would be forced out of Forks and have to start their lives over.

You haven't read the book have you?

They need the thunder because they are vampires, they have super strength and bodies made of hard granite-like material. When they hit the ball it makes a loud cracking sound like thunder, and when they collide into one another it makes a loud sound, they need the thunder to cover the sounds.

Because when they hit the ball with the bat it makes a loud boom that sounds like thunder. So if they play on a sunny day, people around for miles will just randomly hear thunder and will probably get pretty confused.

hey there! they need thunder and lightning for a cover up...ok being that they're so strong when they hit the ball it sounds just as loud as thunder and lightning...if they were to do that on any other day, people would go crazy trying to figure out what those horrible loud noises are....i hope this cleared up your question :0]

They don't need lightning, only thunder. & that is because of the noise they make when they hit the ball. It explains it in the book.

Because when they hit the bat and or crash into each other they make a noise that sounds like thunder. This masks their playing.

to cover up how louad they hit the ball in the book they explained that they would hit it soo hard that it would sound like thunder froma thunder storm so therefore they can onlyplay during thunder storms.

They are extremely strong and when they hit the ball it is as loud as thunder, so they need to the storm so humans don't hear it.

when they hit/bat it makes alot of noise and as the book says "Emmett and Edward slammed into each other like two boulders" or something like that. IDK why they need lightning, it wouldn't make a difference. All they need is the thunder.

Havent you read the book ?

When they hit the ball it makes such a loud cracking noise that people would be like, wtf is that noise?

So they play when there's a thunderstorm, so the thunder can disguise the noise (:
