Introduction: Sometimes there are solid substance mixtures where you can dissolve certain things they contain but not the others in the mix. This is kind of like sand, salt, and iron. Iron is magnetic, salt can be temporarily dissolved into water but then later on dry out into a solid again, and sand can be separated by a filter. Iron is a malleable, silver-white metallic element. Salt is a product formed by the neutralization of an acid by a base. Furthermore sand is fine debris or rocks, consisting of small usually loose grains. With this information the sum of the mass of each solid should equal the total mass of the original mixture.

Three solids that we can most likely associate with are sand, salt, and iron. One of the biggest jobs is being able to recognize substances and how to separate them precisely. This lab is used to teach the importance of separation and accuracy while doing so. Also to get acquainted with the new lab tools.
