Does it matter where you put the addresses on a cover letter?

I am a little stumped. I am writing my cover letter and I have everything down pat except for the addresses.

Do I align the addresses to the left, putting mine first and the employer second or do I put mine to the right first and the employer aligned to the left afterward?

In the US, you NEVER put your address at the right, ever.

So, if you are in the US, the standard business format of a letter should be one of the following:

Treat your letter as if it were printed on letterhead. Your name, address, phone & email should be centered at the very top. I set my top margin to 1/2" or 3/4" or put my info in the header section.

I am fond of full block letters (they are easiest to read), which means everything starts on the left hand margin.

    Your Name

    Address

    Phone

    Email

    (return twice)

    Date

    (return twice)

Name of hiring manager or department (if you have it)

    Company name

    Address

fax/email (if you are sending the letter that way)

    (return twice)

"Re: Administration Position (use the title the company used)

    (return twice)

Dear (mr./Ms. Last Name) or To Whom it May Concern:

    (return twice)

    your letter, blah, blah, blah

    (return twice)

    Regards,

My answers comes from the practical basis of being a business owner for 21 years and hiring people, not from the college English class:

You should put your address first, at the right. Then put the recipient's address on the left, just before your salutation and body.

    But here's the bigger point:

Whoever's going to ticky-tack your cover letter when you submit it needs to get a life. And if you're hoping the professionalism of your cover letter's gonna help you get the job, then please allow me to suggest you need a clearer perspective. Here's who's going to get that job you're applying for:

Either the boss's niece, or an inside promotion, OR... if neither of those are in the hopper, THEN whichever outsider is the most creative and memorable and persistent and energetic and alert and recent and well-groomed and funny and UP IN THEIR GRILL (in person) on a weekly basis or less. Not the guy/girl with the properly-formatted cover letter!

Best of success in your search.

Your address should be at the top right hand side, with your telephone number underneath (if you have one).

Leave a line or two and then put the date on the same side,

Leave another couple of lines and then insert the address of the employer on the left hand side.

Leave another couple of lines and then start your letter - Dear Sirs,

    Hope this helps.
