Another hibiscus question?

Hello, folks--me again!! I got my hibiscus about a month ago. One bloom was open when I bought it. There are several buds on it--3 have fallen off. There is one bloom which looks as if it is about to bloom very soon, but it's been quite awhile, and it hasn't opened yet--is there something I should be doing? By the way, my plant has dark, shiny green leaves.

Update:

Uh, matt, your experience moves me, and I'm glad you found your missing items, but it still doesn't help me! lol

Update 2:

Thanks, everyone, for your helpful advice. I do have a bloom--it looks like it's about to open, but hasn't opened for a few days--nearly a week. I am thinking that this is the wrong time of the year to have a bloom--it was forced by the nursery. Hopefully, I'll do better next year if I keep it dormant during the winter. Thanks folks!

This is a tropical plant. I grew quite a few in Atlanta. Its December and the daylight is at it's shortest.

By your description ................It's doing just fine.

Blooms generally stay for about 2 days, then fall off. New blooms take about 2 days to open.

    Dark green leaves - perfect.

Around February it will start to look a little sad. Normal.

Come next spring give it a little fertilizer and move outdoors when temps stay above 50.

Next fall apply a little more fertilizer and around November when you want to bring it in - please repot. Tug at the roots and pull off any that are brown - trust me it like's it. Repot with fresh soil and enjoy.

    Your doing fine...............

There are hibiscus that are hardy in northern areas, not all are tropical plants.

They do all need full sun.

Look closely at the bud that has not opened. Sometimes the seed pod that is maturing after the petals drop can look like a bud, but it is not. If there are more than one of them, take it off and cut through it and look at it. You'll be able to tell by what is inside, if it is a flower bud or a seed pod.

Hibiscus are very high light level plants. Bud drop is not unusual when a plant has had a change in environment. Over feeding with high nitrogen is another cause.

Give it the best light you can, use a fertilizer with a high middle number, and give it a chance to adjust.

hibisucus need lotes of sun light. they do not like being indoors, but will overwinter indoors fine. they are outdoor plants so when the warm weather returns bring it outside in full sun and water alot with ocassional plant food. it should make alot of buds and flowers, and in the winter prune it back a little to keep it clean and to stop indoor flowering so the plant can stay dormat until next summer.

    good luck

    1) ROTFLMAO at matt

    2) make sure you are not keeping it to wet or two dry and it is getting good light and occasional light fertilizer won't hurt eather.

to much water will cause it to rot and not enough will cause the plant to stress and the flowers will dry and fall off to conserve water

Rip it out of the dirt and stomp in to death,

I Hate Hibiscus, For many years they surrounded our front yard and every one of those years they swallowed every baseball, Softball, Wallet, set of keys, that got near them,

then my mother decided to sell that house and thought if we take them out it would open up the front of the house making it nicer to look at something i knew for years, she was going to have a friend do it but i volunteered, that was a very good idea, so me and a thick cable and my 4x4 went to work, It was a battle but I won, and recovered 29 baseballs, 3 of my wallets containing about $500.00 dollars total, and a few sets of keys, It's good to be the King,
