What heat should I leave on in the house?

I have to go take care of a sick relative this winter and must leave my home for several weeks. I will turn off the water and water heater, but I am worried about my home furnishings not getting mildewed, etc., so want to leave a tiny bit of heat on in the house. What is the lowest temperature where my carpets and wood furniture won't be damaged?

Most rental associations expect you to keep the place at 55 degrees F to keep the pipes from freezing. If you're shutting off your water this may change things though.

As long as the house is dry you should be fine with the lowest setting on your thermostat.

You may want to either have someone regularly check on the house in case a power failure cuts off the furnace or winterize by turning off the main water valve, drain the water lines, and put RV antifreeze in the drains and toilets.

Our rental property has been winterized this way and we had no damage at all last year and we're in an area which gets very cold

If you are turning off the water....be sure to drain the pipes too, then the cold shouldn't hurt the furniture. It's usually heat and humidity that could damage them.

I would say at least 50-55 somewhere in between there or a little higher should be efficient and everything should stay okay. Hope I helped!!

I would be worried about the pipes freezing before mildew.

Keep it at 45 degrees, won't hurt your furniture.
