Really bad dry skin. Tips? ?
Alright, I have a predominately black paint gelding, and now that winter is here, He is REALLY bad dandruff, I mean all over his neck and some on his body, and its really bad. Is there anything I can do to make it go away, Its too cold most the time to give him a bath, and miracle groom didn't help. So do you have any tips on how to get rid of crazy bad dandruff?

Theres multiples of natural ingredients you can add to his feed.
My personal favorites are black oil sunflower seed *cheaper by the bag at walmart than feed store* and corn oil.
You can feed the sunflower seeds without grain if you aren't graining the horse, I just give my guys a handful or 2 each a day when I remember.

get a round, rubber curry and really massage him to help imorove his circulation and exfoliate.
he sounds like he needs some more oil in his diet. try adding a cup of something corn or sunflower based, like mazola oil. you can buy these in any grocery store for a fraction of the price you'll paty at the feed company.
if he is really bad and it's hard to keep clear you might have to clip him, if he isn't done already.
get a special anti-dandruff shampoo, you don't have to splash out on a horsey one, head and shoulders will do. really scrub his neck and mane with it.

He might not be getting enough fat in his diet. Is he skinnier now in the winter? You might want to try putting in some corn oil in his grain or flax seeds.
Did you try classic show sheen? Try something that is a spray on conditioner. Vaseline/baby oil might work too.

My friend has a horse with itchy skin all the time. Her vet had some supplements on site that has worked wonderfully. They said it could only be bought from a vet, so call your vet and ask for the skin care supplements. It was 25 for two months.

Feed soya oil every day in his feed. It really helps to improve the coat & skin. Available from most feed shops.

I'd say to add some additional fat to his diet. I've heard corn oil, and flax work really well, but its up to you. I hope this helps, and that your horse feels better!
