how do you fall asleep with an aquarium in the room?
my fish tank is in my room I shut off the bubbler in the night since I have a cold water tank and the goldfish don't really need it anyways all it does is waste electricity and keep me up. I got a new filter today more powerful than the old so the water gushes out and makes the trickling noise I plan to switch back to my old one overnight since I still have a brand new cartridge for it that won't fit my new one and it's quieter and makes no noise and so I can give each a rest instead of having one run 24/7 have one run during the day and one at night but how can I fall asleep with the new one after I throw out the old
the water level is a tiny bit less then 1/2 from the top black border plastic thingy the reccomended level by the manual of the filter

Simple I just lie down and close my eyes and drift off into a blissful sleep. I find the sound of my aquariums running to be quite soothing.
If the sound of an aquarium filter or bubbler keeps you awake then you are way to sensitive. I would think that you need to learn to live with it or move the tank to another room.
From the sound of things though I would say that your aquarium is definitely low on water. Fill it up to the proper level. As for turning your filters on and off that is a mistake and the end result will be a tank that suffers because of it. Your filters will be less effective due to bacterial die off, and the inhabitants of your tank will be the ones to pay the price.

Well first of all, you should make sure your water level is high enough so that the water doesn't just splash all over the place, which will give you a much quieter room by the way.
Anyways, most people go for a 24/7 filter. It's a better way than to have two filters going on and off, because when a filter rests, the bacteria literally suffocates and dies, and there goes your month of cycling down the drain.
And if raising the water level doesn't work, you eventually just have to get used to it. Seriously, you will.

I know how you feel! I had this problem with my son, he would have to be rocked to sleep everynight. Sometimes it would take forever and i would get so frustrated. The last few nights i have only rocked him a little bit and he has not gone to sleep so i put him in his bed and tell him good night and look at the clock, i go outside of the room and leave the door open just a little enough for me to see him. If he starts crying I let him only cry for about 3 to 5 min. Then i go in and tell him goodnight again and lay him back down and do it all over again. Finally he will give up and go to sleep. But i know what you mean about the terrible crys I feel so bad! But the last 3 days now he has gone right in his bed and not cried longer than a min and went to sleep so i think i am getting somewhere with this. Tonight he didnt cry at all! So i figured i am doing ok by him if i just let him know i am there for him still. I don't want him sleeping with me forever so i had to do something!. He is 15months old by the way. Hope this helps you.

I have a 75 gallon with 2 HOB filters and I pull the propeller out while I sleep and let it run when I get up. It's a planted tank so the tank doesn't have to be filtered 24 hours! I can't stand the noise of the tank.....but I like to watch it when laying in bed.

I had the same problem when I first got an aquarium. You just gotta learn to deal with it....That's what I did. You might want to adjust the power on the filter if it's really bad. Another reason could be that the water level is too low, if that's the case just add more water, and the noise will die off.

When ever my fish tank starts making that trickling noise, I know its time to add more water to my tank. If your water is to the bottom of the filter, and the water doesn't have to travel any to the water level in the tank, then it wont trickle. After a while, you probably will get used to it.

I heard of a way to make it quiter but I don't know if it works, you take a large bottle (like the 2L pop bottles) and cute of the top and bottom, then cut it in half and use that piece, tape it over where the water comes out (you might have to use a glue gun) and that should make it not so loud.

Are you sure the fish tank has enough water in it? Frequently when my tanks are low in water they are loud. Once I top them off with water, they are silent. If they have enough water, maybe there is an issue with your tank, as you shouldn't have to turn it off at night.

You'll get used to it.
During the summer I can hear the pond flowing, bugs screeching, frogs calling, and occasionally cows and bobcats. After a while it becomes comforting and you have trouble falling asleep without it.

To me that would PUT me to sleep. Plus if you leave the light on it would just lull me to sleep watching the fish. I guess you wouldn't do so well at a beach side resort!LOL
