Do you think Jeff Gordon will pass Pearson on the all-time wins list...?

...or at least have 100 career wins before retiring? As a Gordon fan, I'm hoping that he will accomplish as much as he can before he retires. Passing Allison, Waltrip, and Yarborough should be a piece of cake. With his 81 wins so far, he is 25 wins away from passing David Pearson. There's no question that Jeff Gordon is capable of doing this. But entering 2009, he has only had 23 wins since 2002. So do you think that Gordon will be able to pass Pearson for second on the all-time wins list? Just give me your honest opinion if answering.

Update:

Forgot to mention that David Pearson has 105 career wins.

Update 2:

No, I'm just talking about Cup wins.

I think that he has a chance as long as they can get things back together and not have another year like this one ! On Jeff's website they say that they figured out what was going wrong 60% of the time,so I hope the can get that other 40 % figured out !

As long as Steve Latarte can get his race set ups right, and Jeff can start winning, not sure if he will pass Pearson, he has to probably race another 5 ys, and I'm just not sure if he will race 5 more yrs. The competitiion out there now is fierce, I think he will come close, but I do not see him passing the Silver Fox Pearson. If Jeff has another yr like this yr, then its not gonna happen for sure.

I think Gordon will pass Yarborough, Allison, and Waltrip for third but I think that Pearson may be too far away to pass. With Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, and Kyle Bush winning two-thirds of the races, it will be hard for him to win 25 more to pass Pearson. If the US automakers all fail, NASCAR may be a thing of the past. Many sponsors and fans would boycott an all foreign field.

No way does Gordon get near 100 wins unless something changes on his team. He has to battle against guys like Edwards and his teammate Johnson for wins. The fact that he went winless in 2008 doesn't look so good, either. I can't see him getting more than 5 wins in a single season. The last few years the 24 car struggles way too much to be a consistent contender the way he used to be. He's filthy stinking rich, has a wife and child, and he's pushing 40. Maybe the determination to win just isn't there the way it used to be.

Ever since he had his kid, he seems to settle for top 5's instead of wins. I don't know if this is coincidental or if he is driving more cautiously than he did when he was younger. Let's face it, Johnson, as his teammate, who's the best driver in the sport, has the same equipment and resources. He seems to be driving circles around Gordon. 25 wins is a lot for a 35 plus year old to achieve in the twilight of his career, considering he hasn't been the Gordon of the 90's for a few years.

I think that would be a very difficult task to accomplish... he only has a couple years left before he hangs it up (sniff sniff), and it would be extremely difficult to produce 25 wins in three years... he would need around eight wins per year, and that means basically dominating the sport for three years. As big of a fan as I am of Gordon, I don't see that happening. But I would be very amazed and proud of the man if indeed he proves me wrong and passes Pearson on the win list.

Now you've got me something to think about.

I think he can if he races a few more years and him and Steve Letarte start really clicking like they did in 2007. But this day in time in Nascar the competition is getting better and with a second full year with the COT I think things are really going to tighten up a bit.

But yes, I think he can do it before his career is up. The only other drivers at this current time I see even getting close to Jeff, Pearson & Earnhardt Sr wins are Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson of course.

    Happy New Year Nascar Nation!

I don't think Jeff will be in the cup series long enough to beat the Silver Fox's 105 wins. Jeff will be retired within the next 3 or 4 years.

If he races for another 5 years he might could break the record but I keep getting this feeling that Jeff will be retiring soon. Does that include Nationwide series wins too? If he were to get busy in the Nationwide series then yes he could do it. The Nationwide series still runs cars like the ones he has had the most success with. If he just tries for the title in the cup series then he probably won't make it.

I think it is possible. Jeff is a real good driver and I think that luck is an important part of nascar and luck was not on his side last year. Also in order to win a team needs to be in since. Pit crew, spotter, driver, car, mechanics, crew chief and luck. I think he will find that combination again (like he has so many other times) and win quite a few races next year and eventually pick up 25 more wins to pass Pearson.

Best of luck to him next year and I think he can do it. At least by the end of his career.

  • I have always rooted for Jeff. However it seems to me that his priorities have changed since he has had a family. And I don't believe that winning is his top priority anymore. He is making good money placing as he is and he is also making money as a car owner. I believe he has fallen from grace because of this. Now don't get me wrong... He is a great driver, an accomplished athlete and has achieved what only a handful of men have achieved. His heart is just not in it. But I keep hoping like in my favorite flick "Days of Thunder" he would somehow get it together and win more races in one season than anyone before and take the championship one more time! I just don't want to see him fade out I want to see him blast out. But no one will ever beat Richard Pettty no matter what.
