Recommended supplements to heal hoof problems?
I have a 10 yr old TB gelding with a quarter crack that runs from the cornet to the bottom of the hoof. He has been on pasture for about 2 months - brought him home yesterday and discovered this crack. It's not infected. Just long. His feet are long so I will be having them trimmed asap. But does anyone have any supplements they would recommend to help grow it out? Anyone have experience with quarter cracks? Would love to hear from you.
thanks!
thank you all - these are some great suggestions and I will be comparing the ingredients in the different supplements. I know the biotin is the main ingredient needed for healthy hooves. I hadn't thought about veg. oil though. Worth trying if I can get him to eat it! :)

wow i have the same problem
1. start him on Farriers Formula its expensie kinda but SO worth it
2. Keretex (spelling?) his hooves 2x's a day
3. put bell boots on him
4. Heart bar shoes to keep his hoove together
5. for extra you can put wax in the crack but make sure its VERY clean first or you could just put iodine in it every day after the Keretex
Hope this helps
Good luck

The Crack Itself: Quarter cracks can run the gamut from being completely debilitating to absolutely nothing at all. If your horse isn't lame because of it, there's really no worries. Just get him trimmed well, and take care of it daily. If it's bad enough, or he's sore, and your farrier recommends it, he can "staple" the crack together (supporting the wall so it doesn't continue to split) or use a composite material to pack around the crack/wall to complete the hoof as it grows out.
As for Supplements: If your horse is on a good and nutritionally complete diet, he will function just fine and his hooves will grow out as they normally would. However, if you would like to add a supplement, choose something with biotin. Farriers Formula is a good blend, as others have mentioned.

My Tb was barefoot for a while and she got quarter cracks on both of her front feet all the way down. My advice is to keep shoes on him to keep the crack from getting deeper or longer, and feed him Biotin Plus and about 1/2-1 cup of vegetable oil with his feed. The biotin Plus helps speed up growth(helps the crack grow out faster) and strengthens the hoof to help prevent more cracks. The oil also helps to strengthen the hoof by providing vital moisture which is essential for good hoof heath. I also use Rain Maker on my horse's feet about once a week. My horse just got shoes put on her about 8 weeks ago and the cracks have already grown out about 3/4 of an inch(which is pretty fast for hooves), and I always get complements on how good her feet are as well. Hope I helped!

P.S. The Biotin Plus has cinnamon in it, so it smells like a big cookie, and my horse loves the taste.
Edit: Most horses eat oil willingly. It doesn't taste like anything. They don't really like the oil texture, but I have still yet to meet a horse that wouldn't eat it.

I have been using Farrier's Formula b/c one of my horses ended up getting terrible quarter cracks on both front hooves. It has done an amazing job and made a very noticable difference in anly a couple months so far. I would highly recommend it!

biotin is considered to assist in rapid growth of hooves.. but, in my experience, the hooves haven't been as strong. I'd put an egg shoe on him - cutting a groove out around the quarter crack so it doesn't get added pressure on it - then keep the coronet band soft w furizone [the kind in vaseline]. Then just give it time to grow out and heal.

Farriers Formula is the best!!!!!! I know others have said this same answer but it really works; created by farriers, recommended by them. Here is the link: http://www.lifedatalabs.com/index.php?act=farriers...
You can also brush on a hoof strengthener (not polish) to assist in mending the hoofs between trims.

farriers formula is the best
but yuo can also use formula4 feet or biotin or naf pro feet.
you could try adding a seaweed supplement to his feed.
