  • Veg*ns... do you/will you vaccinate yourself/children?

In doing my research as to whether to vaccinate our children, I pulled up the CDC's "Vaccine Excipient & Media Summary" of the ingredients in currently administered vaccines... and it's an eye-opener, to say the least.

I won't get into the safety/efficacy questions regarding vaccination here, but I'm curious as to other vegetarian/vegan opinions on many of the animal ingredients in these vaccines... including, but not limited to...

    -human serum albumin

    -fetal bovine serum

    -human-diploid fibroblast cell cultures

    -Vero (monkey kidney) cells

    -Fenton medium (containing bovine extract)

    -calf serum

    -egg protein

    -chick embryo cell culture

(there are quite a number more, and these are just from a handful of injections... very few seem to be free of any animal or human-tissue based culture).

Just curious to see the veg*n take on vaccination from this angle (I'm not looking for rhetorical or otherwise debate about the safety/efficacy of vaccines... that's for another section of YA entirely).

For those who are interested in the full ingredient lists: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkbook/download... ... it's current as of February 2012.

  • Infant vitamin d without parabens?

I'm having a helluva time finding an infant supplement without parabens added. Our son is 8 months old, breastfed, and taking 2 meals of solids daily... I don't personally think that he needs the supplementation, but we're on the "lets be safe" side of it. I'll only give them if I can find a safe version. Any suggestions?

  • When did you pack for the hospital?

Well, we're at 33 weeks, and starting to get things at the house really put in line for whenever baby makes his appearance (I do NOT want to leave a dirty/disorganized house when I go to the hospital. lol).

Both my husband and I have a sneaking suspicion that our little one won't be waiting the whole 40 weeks to come, and while I'm certain it won't be for at least a few more weeks (no reason to believe otherwise, and really, we're 33 weeks... not too much of a chance of him coming this early), I'm just curious... when did you ladies (who've had children already) pack up for the hospital? It seems like overkill to be doing it up now... but then, I also don't want to be scrambling around in between contractions throwing things into a bag if he *does* decide he's done baking sooner than we're anticipating ;)

Forgive the first-time-mama over-preparation and slight paranoia.

  • For those who like to claim the US is a "Christian Nation"...?

... how do you reconcile that with the fact that verbatim in the Treaty of Tripoli (1797) it is explicitly stated "The government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian Religion".

Yes, Christianity was the most populous religion at the time, but that did not stop our founding fathers from explicitly providing a separation of Church and State, etc.

  • Extremism on the Right or Left?

Why does it seem that the majority of "extremists" either acting out or threatening violence/bodily harm/etc. come from the Right side of the political spectrum?

We're trying to narrow down some of our boy name options. :) We're expecting our first on March 5, and will be using a family name for his first name (he'll be a 4th). Middle names is where we're running into major dilemmas! lol... So, my question being, which of the below do you like? Which do you hate? Etc, etc. etc.

    Ian Indiana

  • Saturn shaking when accelerating?

    I'm having a problem with my 2002 Saturn SL2...

    Back story:

We had an alignment done approximately one week ago. At the same time, had a tie rod replaced. Car was driving perfectly. Then, drove from Florida to Kentucky... car did perfectly the entire way until we stopped for gas the last time. Immediately after returning to the interstate after re-fueling, it began shaking violently when we accellerated past 45mph. Pulled over, no flat tire, nothing noticeably wrong.

I was told (by several people) that most likely it was a tank of bad gas that we received at that last station. However, we drove the gas down to approximately 1/8 tank, added a bottle of Heet (as was recommended by above people), and re-filled the tank with fresh gas, as well as replaced the air filter.

However, nothing seems to have changed. Now...

-The car will shake (though not the gear shift or the steering wheel independently... the entire car... so, thus-far all have ruled out a problem with the mechanics of the wheels/etc. themselves) once we hit approximately 40mph. It is fine at lower speeds, and only really noticeable at higher speed and at 4th and 5th gears.

-At 40mph, if I take my foot off the gas, it continues shaking, stops when I push in the clutch.

-At 45+, it shakes only when the gas is pushed... if I let off the gas, the shaking stops.

Any ideas? I'm at a complete loss... asking on here, as we can't get it into the shoppe until Monday morning.

  • Comments/Critiques on these, please?

Just looking for some input... these are just small uploads of a couple shots, shot on film, scanned, and small border added for internet purposes... let me know what you think.

PS: I do know about the technicalities of having a moving/running object in the left of the frame (see shot 2), but I ignored it for this one, as he was ahead of the pack, but does it still work? I can't decide.
