ToryL - un canard de Rouen
I am devoted to my husband, my family, and my faith. I enjoy working with youth, training and showing horses, historical re-enacting, gardening, reading, music, my collies, sheep, and of course, my carnads du Rouen! I am old enough to be as eccentric as I want to be and young enough to still enjoy every moment of life and the beauty that surrounds me. "I sing because I'm happy" "I sing because I'm free" "His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me." (\__/) (- '.'- ) Me and Bunny are BUDS! :) (")_(")
need help from experienced cat rescue / vet / vet tech?
Details - 8 days ago a semi-feral cat had her kittens in the flowers & weeds in the side of my house. 5 of the kittens were tightly tangled up in a weed vine and their umbilical cords. When I found them I had to cut them loose. 4 of the kittens where fine - the 5th one had damage to his hind legs below the hock where the weed was so tightly wound it cut off circulation. Every day, 2x's a day I wash his hind legs in peroxide and benedine and apply antibiotic. The hind feet have atrophied. One has completely fallen off, the other is only hanging on by a thread of skin. But there does not appear to be infection. There is bone visiable at the joint where the foot has come off. My questions are - can I save this kitten? Can a cat manage without back feet? If I can keep the wounds clean will the skin heal over the bone? Please don't tell me to take this kitten to a vet. 1. I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on surgeries. 2. My vet would tell me to put him to sleep. I had a lamb with 2 broken legs, he said it wouldn't survive. I set her legs and now she is 3 yrs old and doing great. So my vet is a good person but he wouldn't want to spend my money on a stray kitten. I need to know what I can do for this kitten on my own. He's a fighter. He is 8 days old now. He seems to be nursing and scooting himself around. I just need to know if he has a chance and what I can do to give him the best possible one. Thank you.
4 AnswersCats9 years agoQuestion about Native American, Indian Medicine?
I have always been told that modern medicine utilized many herbal medicines from native cultures. One being the use of willow bark for pain, (i.e. aspirin) I have a student who would like to write a paper on this topic and I am trying to find sources for this. Can anyone provide more information or resources?
Thanks!
5 AnswersOther - Cultures & Groups10 years agoDoes the native american (Indian / NDN) community feel that Obama is keeping his promises?
Read that Michael Black, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, has been named director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The article also states:
"Black joins a growing list of other Native Americans from South Dakota who have assumed prominent posts in the Obama administration. Yvette Roubideaux, a member of the Rosebud tribe, is director of the Indian Health Service, and Lillian Sparks, a Lakota woman of the Rosebud and Oglala Sioux Tribes, recently was named commissioner of the administration for Native Americans."
I'm just wondering if these changes are making any positive changes for the native community.
If you're native I would like to hear your perspective.

4 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoCan a lamb with 2 broken legs recover?
One of my ewes stepped on her lamb and broke it's front leg. We set and splint it - she seemed to be doing ok so we put the lamb back in with the mother. The next day the lamb had another broken leg! This time a hind leg. So now the lamb is in a pen next to the ewe, I milk out the ewe and bottle feed the lamb. She is gaining weight and seems to be surviving, but can she really heal up with 2 broken legs? Or am I setting myself up for a heartbreak when I loose her because she is quickly becoming a pet.

6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoAccurate / Appropriate Literature re: Native American, "Indians"?
I teach a resource 8th grade English class and am always looking for a book/novel that would be of interest to my students. I recently picked up a short novel to see if it was something that I would want my students to read and I was horrified by the archaic and asinine portrayal of the native americans in the story. I cleaned all copies of the book off the shelves in my room. It wasn't worth keeping.
But it got me thinking, are there any good novels, historical fiction, or even historical accounts from an Indigenous perspective that would be appropriate for this reading level? Most of my students are young men and living in a rural area in the Rocky Mt. west they have a fascination for the native american culture. I would love to give them interesting and ACCURATE perspectives. I do have copies of "The Lakota Way" but that is a collection of short stories.
Does anyone have any good suggestions? Hope to hear from you. Thanks
5 AnswersOther - Cultures & Groups1 decade agoLDS & Others Need to find duet for Thanksgiving - any suggestions?
My daughter and I have been asked to sing in our Sacrament over Thanksgiving weekend. I am struggling to find some music. Of course everyone loves "Because I have Been Given Much" but that is too often done. My daughter is a wonderful mezzo soprano and we compliment each other well. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have browsed through Sally DeFord's site but she doesn't have much for Thanksgiving music. Please let me know if you know of something that is not the "same old same old." We would love something new or an arrangement that is challenging. :)
Thank you!
3 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoNeed info on ewe reproductive health?
I have a ewe with a swollen vulva. If you know sheep you know the vulva is pointy at the bottom - that is the part that is swollen. She is not off her feed, she is in good condition and otherwise seems fine. What would cause the swelling and any suggestions on how it should be treated? Please don't tell me "ask a vet." I thought I would try here first. If I can't get a decent answer I will ask my vet.
Thanks!
1 AnswerZoology1 decade agoHow do you get that "Show Horse Shine?"?
From a nutritional viewpoint, not grooming. I've been reading up on feeding supplements and have come across some interesting tips on putting/keeping weight on a lean horse. Many have suggested adding corn/vegetable oil to feed, I even saw where one person suggested putting an egg in the grain.
Does any one have other suggestions/tips for getting the best mane/tail/coat possible from your horses? I would love to hear your special recipes.
Thanks so much!
11 AnswersHorses1 decade agoNavajo culture and "etiquette" with gift giving?
Some background - My husband and I will be spending a week camping and riding on the Navajo reservation down in Monument Valley. While most of the week we will be in remote areas I know that one evening we will be riding to the homestead of the family who's land we are camping on. (They have a few thousand acres so this will be the only time we visit the family's home) From the guide who is arranging this trip I know the matriarch of the home is in her 90's and widowed and her sons help organize this ride and camp but it's a non-native who we deal with.
Ok - so, my question is, my husband ( who is Choctaw/Lakota) does bead work on brain tan and has made some gifts to give to this family. But we don't know details so would it be appropriate to give a gift only to the matriarch or should we try to have enough to give to everyone in the family? (having no idea how many that might be?)
Any thoughts or info on the Navajo culture would be very much appreciated!
thanks!

8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoRecommended supplements to heal hoof problems?
I have a 10 yr old TB gelding with a quarter crack that runs from the cornet to the bottom of the hoof. He has been on pasture for about 2 months - brought him home yesterday and discovered this crack. It's not infected. Just long. His feet are long so I will be having them trimmed asap. But does anyone have any supplements they would recommend to help grow it out? Anyone have experience with quarter cracks? Would love to hear from you.
thanks!

why won't my hydrangeas bloom? Is it because they aren't roses? I keep them in the shade, I water them, I plant them in the best compost, I pray over them.....why oh why won't my hydrangeas bloom?
9 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoSpiritually Speaking, is this not cause to rejoice?
After successfully retrieving my runaway hobbled horses I went for a ride. I spotted two Golden eagles just out wind sailing, scattered a mother duck and her brood of 7 ducklings next to the canal, startled up a 4 point buck, still in the velvet, in the wheat field, and had an exhilarating gallop. My only concern about death is that Heaven won't be as good as this life.
Have you had cause to rejoice today?
5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoSpiritually speaking, I hobble my horses in the deepest green pasture...
I leadest them to the clearest clean water. So why do they want to go hobbling off? What makes them think the grass is greener on the other side of the road?! They have 5 acres of beautiful (unfenced) pasture and they have to go to the other side of the road?!?!?
Gotta run, horses are hobbling away......lololol

7 AnswersOther - Hardware1 decade agomyspace help?
I have an account on myspace that my daughter set up for me a few years ago. I don't access it much. When I tried to log in today it said my account was deleted. But my page still comes up when I do a search for me. When I try to register for a new account - it tells me the email address I want to use is being used by another user. (ME!) So, if my account is deleted, why can I still see my page? And why can't I register for a new account using the same email address? Any suggestions? Thanks!
2 AnswersMySpace1 decade agoFellow LDS! What are your FHE Plans?
Since it is Family Night, what are you all doing? I answered an earlier question and mentioned that we are having another family over for dinner and FHE. Just bar-b-quing hamburgers, having a little target practice with bows and arrows, and then I sneak in a lesson on hitting our goals in life. I mean, my audience here are a couple of teen age boys and our husbands, you know how much much they all LOVE FHE! NOT! LOLOLOLOL
I need a good song though......any suggestions? What are you doing?
