Where to learn officiating?

I recently started to play flag football on a small town local league and I'm now becoming interested in learning to be an official. Do you know of any good schools or city parks department that has a national well recognized training program? I can learn from the locals but would also like good formal training as well. I officiated softball years ago, but lost interest and I think it was a lack of good training that frustrated me. I will read all answers before awarding the points.

Your best bet is to join a group that works the high school games in your area. Typically they will start new officials with youth leagues and help you move up. There are a variety of training camps across the country but they will be above your head until you get a season under your belt.

Look up "football officials association" in your home town, contact a local high school to find out where they get their officials, or contact your state high school sports governing body (the people who organized state championships) to find out the name of the association in your area.

Another alternative is to ask at this web site http://www.nfhs.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=for... Free registration is required, but the people there are football officials from around the country and may know who to contact in your area.

Contact that association and ask them how to get started. Different associations start up at different times but typically it is in the spring or summer.

Good luck to you. It is a rewarding avocation. You'll learn more about the game than you ever thought you knew, make good friends, get some exercise, and give back to your community. Plus, you can make a few bucks just in time for Christmas next year.

North American School for the Blind - or at least it seems that way sometimes!
