Why do I have double vision when I drive at night?

I'm not sure when this started, as I rarely drive at night, but I've noticed that for the past year or so, when I drive at night I have double vision, and I have to drive with one eye closed. It's very stressful and gives me a headache; I also worry about how safe this is. I am 56 years old; this is probably age related - cataracts, maybe?

Update:

Thank you for your input! I plan to call my eye doctor tomorrow. I am hoping not to have to do any driving at night until I have this taken care of; I don't want to endanger anyone else because of my "predicament".

I don't know about cataracts, but it's possible that it's hereditary. My Mother doesn't see well at night and my Grandmother didn't either when she was alive. Good luck and stay safe out there!
