The .308 round vs. a Grizzly Bear, who wins?

If I walk into bear country with my AR-10 (a semiautomatic AR-15 that shoots .308/7.62 x 51mm rounds) and a 460 lb. grizzly bear charged towards me to attack me. What are my odds of me and my rifle winning over the beast?

Additional Details:

My AR-10 has a 20 round magazine and I carry 4 additional magazines when I walk into bear country. I qualified as an expert in the Marines and can shoot well with iron sights and even better with scopes.

Well i guess this is what it comes down to. If you see the bear before it sees you, and if you are already in a shooting position when it starts to move. A grizzly can run up to 30 mph so i suppose you could have 1000 rounds of ammo an it won't really help when you might get 2 to 3 shots off. your real advantage wouldn't be your shooting ability but your training. Lots of people can shoot really well but your training to react quickly would be your biggest advantage. A .308 will drop a grizzly in its tracks with the right ammo.

I'd say with a semi-automatic .308, with that many rounds at your disposal without needing to reload, it would be nothing short of a slaughter (provided you don't chicken out and flinch if he runs at you before dropping.) Your .308 may not be a "big bore", which would certainly be more suitable for the job if "one shot, one kill" really applies, but .308 still packs a wallop on most of the world's game....and you've got 20 rounds of it as fast as you can pull the trigger. Remember, if the first shot doesn't do it, you are COMMITTED and have to use however many shots it takes to finish the job quickly. You really like your AR. Ok. Overall, 20 spotty shots from a .308 is more formidable in the end than one badly placed shot from the bolt or lever-action big bore that might make many people flinch. Just remember, your approach and choice of platform lends itself not to "hunting" but to a slaughter...provided you have the nerve for follow up shots. If your choice was a simple 4-shot bolt action rifle also in .308, I'd have a very different answer for you...something like: "Say your prayers." It might be the same caliber, but your chance for follow up shots decreases greatly and if you miss once or twice out of the four...well...been nice knowing you.

If a grizzly is charging, It's head will be the only target presented to you. A .308 will probably not have the capability to penetrate the bears thick skull. Grizzly bear skulls have been known to stand up to multiple direct hits from a .30-06. Considering that bears can run 35 MPH, mostly inhabit thick brush, and will be charging at close range, you will only have time to get a few shots off if any, so additional magazines won't do anything but weigh you down.

I'm not going to say impossible but chances are against a .308, the bear wins.

Unless you like walking through the woods with bags full of garbage, or rotten fish strapped to your head, bears are not an imminent threat, and carrying a battle rifle for bear protection is completely unnecessary. Bear attacks are very rare. On average, only 30 people are attacked each year in the US and maybe only 1 to 5 of those attacks are by grizzlies, the rest by black bears. Bears are not normally aggressive towards humans, in most cases they would rather have absolutely nothing to do with us. Most attacks occur when the bear is startled with its cubs or while feeding, even these situations can usually be diffused by slowly backing away. Bears often bluff charge several times to see how you react before actually charging, your best defense in this situation is a canister of bear spray, I have used it several times against bluff charging bears with 100% success. A firearm should be used as the last option.

I would much rather have a can of bearspray and a .454 Casull by my side.

You may win, but the odds are with the bruin. With all respect to Marine marksmanship, you aren't that good. If you get close to vitals on your one shot you'll get, and you won't get a second, you're very unlikely to hit well on a target moving that fast and with the target moving irregularly in every direction. Moreover, the only thing the AR platform has going for it is familiarity; otherwise, it's a poor choice. For the past year, probably the best choice of caliber might be 375 Ruger, and the rifle the 77 Alaskan without that foolish Hogue stock. Second choice might be a Winchester 1886 or its update, the 71, rebarreled to something like 450 Alaskan, with appropriate reinforcement of the fore-end.

Right now in Siberia on the largest Brown bears in the world, the weapon of choice is the 7.62 NATO handloaded with either 200 or 220 grain bullets. That's 308 semi-auto, for new people. Semper Fi. Regards, Larry.

youre crazy. .308 will punch through 3/8 steel at 100 yards. a bears skull isnt even close to being 3/8 steel

I have a DPMS Panther LR-308 with a Bushnell 6-18x50 scope and I will win. You don't need that many bullets, but it feels better to have them.

Full metal Jackets will penetrate Mr. Bears skull. You packing any of those? You might have to shoot him a few times but they will go through his skull, and probably out the other side.

    Good Luck not getting eaten.
