Facebook privacy question?

Is there a way to make your Facebook profile private while your status updates are public? Also, my profile on facebook is set to be viewable by my network and friends. Recently, someone I know joined Facebook and searched for my profile.(She is not yet on my friends list). She was unable to view any part of my profile. However, another person I know, who is also not on my friends list, was able to look at, at least, my status updates. Both people are in my network, but neither are on my friends list. How is this possible?

Update:

Oh yeah, and the two people who looked at my profile--we looked and they don't have any mutual friends.

one person could be friends with one of your friends. friends of friends are able to see your profile unless you change your settings to only friends. just change everything to only friends, so only your friends could see your profile, pics, albums...... etc.
