In cooking,how many British ounces are there in a standard American cup?

A standard American cup is eight fluid ounces; which is a volume measurement not a weight..and a cup of flour will weigh more than a cup of feathers. for instance..so do not try to convert volume to weight you would need the information for every separate item, use a measuring jug instead and go with the cup measurements.

8 - i.e. one cup = half a pound, but how they can use that as a reliable measurement I'll never understand - let's face it, a cup of flour weighs differently to a cup of rice so consequently the "cup" should be treated in the UK for what it is - a unit of VOLUME, not weight.
