Who should I call to install an exhaust fan in my bathroom? And electrician or an air conditioning company?

We desperately need an exhaust fan installed in our upstairs bathroom. There is one tiny window, which is not enough to expel all of the moisture (esp. living in FL!)... and no air conditioning vent. The bathroom is located on an exterior wall so I wouldn't think it would be too complicated. I just don't know who I should call to do it.

Actually, either one can do this job. When building new houses the electrician sets the fan housing and runs the wires, then the AC man runs the duct work when he roughs in his AC unit. Since there's gonna be a switch involved, I'd call an electrician first.

An electrician or a plumber should be able to do it for you. I do not know for sure BUT i'm here to tell you that you can do it yourself.

First buy an exhaust fan of the right size that you can fit into your window and improvise. If you would like it to be fitting then you will need to call some workmen to renovate the windows.

What my dad did was hang the exhaust fan in front of the window (so we are still free to open or shut it). Then you can either rig the wires to a plug OR run it along the ceiling to the nearest light source. So basically everytime we turn on our lights, the Fan starts. Your local DIY shop should have all the supplies you need, just tell them what you are trying to do.

    Downside

It gets a bit messy if you want to install a speed control switch or a separate switch for the fan. If that is the case then I recommend you hire an electrician but plumbers can do it too.

You need to call either or both locally, or if you know one of the answers is for your area. Someone else said the electrician installs the housing and someone later puts in the duct work. Not where I live. The mechanical contractor (heating/AC) installs the fan with the duct work, and later the electrician just wires to it. You'll need both companies to install it unless your area actually has electrician's installing duct work or mechanical companies doing electrical work. Where I live you need to be a licensed electrician to do the electrical work, but there are a few mechanical contractors that are also electrical contractors for situations like this.

Only use the exhaust after a hot bath or shower. To help your A/C (and heat) work most efficiently, make certain that you replace your filter every few months, or even more often if you have indoor pets or a lot of activity in the home. Also, make sure that you are not blocking air vents ( that's the vents with air coming OUT) or returns (that's the one that sucks air back in). You have to have a good circulation of air. Also, if you keep interior doors closed all the time, make sure there is a gap down at the floor (like big enough to stick your fingers under.) That also helps air movement.

You would want a electrician. You a re just having an exhaust fan installed, to an air conditioner.

We Electricians usually install the bath fans when roughing in a house. Reason being it does require electricity and a means of control (switch) in the wall. Depending on how strict your local code enforcement is most plumbers wouldn't touch the electrical by which you will have to hire two contractors.

    Go with the electrician.

We are going to do the same thing. Our bathroom ceiling is very high and the shower steam gets trapped up there above the level of the window. We are going to start with our regular handyman (he does electrical work and general contracting work). We were told that he'd have to cut a hole in the wall for the fan to vent. Do you have a Home Depot or Ace Hardware near you? You can contact them for a good general contractor/handyman referral. We found ours (who is SO great) on Craigslist. Hope that your fan installation goes well. For us, a big issue is that our house is 120 years old and it is full of piping for the old gas lighting system. We have to cut the piping down every time we update a light fixture.

The bathroom fan functions only to remove moist air from the enclosed area of the bathroom and will have no effect on your centrail air system. Keep the bathroom door closed during and after a shower, especially if the fan is on. To make the A/C more efficient, try running your ceiling fans at high speed. This, in effect, will force the cooled air to circulate more in the home. Good luck.
