Why are men who are accused of sexual crimes named, even if they're found innocent?

I understand the logic of protecting the victim, but surely the accuse deserves the same protection unless found guilty?

Update:

sorry - accused

Update 2:

peppermint - because the nature of the crime is so abbhorant. If a man is found not guilty, surely he should have the right to leave court with his reputation? False accusations are made, and the women walk away with no one the wiser, where as the men have to live with everyone knowing about it. That seems unfair to me.

Update 3:

Er, boyfriend? WTF? It's just a question!

Update 4:

Oh, and I'm talking about UK law. Just wondered why the accused was named before the verdict.

Great idea. Perhaps if the name slips out the case should be dismissed. Sex offenders are found guilty or not guilty.

    Sorry about your boyfriend.

Edit--You ask why the defendant is named. Here is why. John O'Malley is arrested. He is charged with rape. He is innocent. His name is not public. He just disappears off the street. You can't find him. Or you name him but do not list the charge. If not listed, people will guess what the charge is. If he is not listed, his trial would have to be in private to not reveal the nature of the case. We need public trials. Also, how do you post bail?

Using the name of the defendant leads to a freer society. I lets the defense investigator to go out and talk to people who can help.

If a name is withheld, then the accused could just disappear.

What then. Freedom means openness. Mistakes will be made, but 95 percent of all accused are convicted or plead.

I apologize about the boyfriend thing. It was a wild guess that is was a personal question.

Totally agree, it gets my blood boiling every time the media covers a celebrity trial (as we know the defendant's identity, and the presumption of innocence seems to non-existent in the wild eyes of the mob). Consider the conventional wisdom on OJ, found innocent, but every survey I've seen shows a resounding majority convinced he did it. Based on what? Did these people review the evidence themselves? Were they present at the trial?

I wonder how some of these people would feel if they were indicted and found their presumption of innocence so flippantly discarded?

A nominee to the SCOTUS once asked after being raked over the coals by the senate where should he go to get his reputation back. I thought that said it all. I feel the same about accused members of society. They should be protected until found guilty.

Totally agree - and not just sexual crimes either. Look at Robert Muratt forever connected to the disappearance of little Maddie. Wrecked his life, I would imagine.

Anyone accused of a crime is named. This is not a witch hunt to degrade men. Unfortunately, our justice system is not set up to hide your identity if u r thought to have committed a crime.

Suspected sexual offenders are treated no different. Why should they be?

Greed. It's all about selling more newspapers, although there is very little actual news in them. The public thrives on others' misery, and the media knows it. It is grossly unfair.

    I totally agree with you.

These men will be branded for life because there are a lot of people out there who believe there is no smoke without fire.

Western society is matriarchal now.. and with it come certain injustices. Did you now that a young man can be charged with rape if he has sex with a drunk women and she then claims to be intoxicated?

Nice, it's all thanks to Harriot Hymen and New Labour.

Thumbs down, yes I expect that, but everything I said is still true.

    EDIT

Yep and that is why young men are turning to Islam: it gives them more of a sense of power and respect into being a man, and it places the society firmly into a patriarchal system. The only trouble is Islam is itself insane and unjust...but there is always a backlash to injustice and I feel this will be the backlash to the current injustices of the present Matriarchal society in which we live today.. thumbs down away.

I understand. An accused person can apply to the court for a suppression order in regards to his/her name.
